My bike has never failed to start yet, but it was obvious that my battery was weakening. So I started looking at the threads on chargers and battery replacements.
There was mention that turning the ignition on and off quickly (to check mileage etc) can upset the canbus system and cause the battery to drain. So I don't do this anymore.
And I now never run with the headlight on in daylight hours. Although I still commute in the dark.

Guess what? My battery seems to have picked up, and feels fully charged.

(Of course now I've said that it'll fail tomorrow morning:augie )

Can't find a headlight switch on mine - how do you turn it off?
How I do it:

1. Start bike.
2. Press indicator cancel and hold for a slow count of 12.
3. Press right turn indicator and hold til light goes off (count of about 6)
If indicator comes on then go back to 2 and try again.

Hope this helps. (It worked on RickAs bike)

It's the same "trick" as you can use on a 1200GS (and probably all BMW CAN bus equipped bikes). You can do it with the engine stopped or running, but not when the bike is moving.

Saga of my battery.

0. Battery stuffed (2nd replacement)
1. Battery took 3 weeks to arrive in UK (out of stock in UK and Germany).
2. I on holidays 2 weeks (thank you very much)
3. Took to dealer last Saturday - replace battery
4. Battery replaced
5. Bike dont start
6. New starter motor on order
7. Will pick up Wed

Wonder if the water injest had something to do with it 3 weeks ago?

btw, hp2 sucks water but starts again. :)

Just back from its annual service with a new battery thanks to Vines (2200 miles)

shit battery end of story. Turning your light off during the day only increases your risk of being hit by a car/truck another biker who thinks your an idiot.
Bought a new battery from the local 129.00 called a deko or something like that from the usa.

Battery issues

BMW have a software update that sorts out the battery issue. Check your software version with the dealer.

Wings,

Do you have any more info on what the software update is supposed to do? I'd love to find out more if you know anything further. My bike is experiencing the same fact pattern discussed in this thread, as well as the previous weak-battery thread (e.g., solid initial start...go on a 30 minute ride...take a fuel break...then a very weak restart).

By way of introduction, I'm new HP2 owner in Seattle USA. I've only had it for a couple days, so my experience with it is limited at this point. I've really appreciated all the postings in this forum to date.

My HP did the same. The dealer got a new battery from BMW and the problem was gone for good. I was told the batteries where faulty.

Experience has taught me otherwise.
I tried "lights on" back in the early eighties when the debate first started, within a couple of days a car pulled out infront of me. Happily and safely not used daytime lights since.
Apart from when I had my 650 - two years of forced lights on - and had two occassions when cars pulled out on me - both times the driver looked at me before pulling out.
I do use my light on motorways and when I think it's prudent to do so.
Shame the HP hasn't got a switch.

Anyway, although my battery hasn't failed me and seems to be doing Ok, I've bought an Odyssey PC545 as extra insurance against getting stuck somewhere (not much room to bump start on Peak distict trails:eek: )
