Weatherproofing the new Zumo 660 mount?

Just contemplating buying a Zumo 660. Loads of info here and on ZumoForums but I'd like some views on the mount. How is it protected from the weather when the Zumo isn't mounted?

I remember all the issues with the pins on the 550 mounts being problematic from damp and wet and that was with the rubber cover.

How does the new 660 mount stop the weather getting in?

Is it attached to the mount like the 550, or is it another piece of kit that needs to be carried around with you?

It needs to be carried with you.

Having used one for over 3,000 miles, including the bike being parked and exposed to heavy rain, I've not had any issues with the connectors.

Here it is fitted on my XJR i done 2000 miles with it fitted to the XJR and 900 miles on my GS so far and never had any problems

The more I read about the 660, the more tempted I am to get myself one.
Must admit, I was waiting for the BMW Nav IV, but at £130 extra for a few buttons and the possibility of problematic garmin updates....I think i'll go for the 660.

.....that will probably soon get lost or pop off and fall down a drain cover
An "attached" sort of little rubber cover would have been nice- as it is it's still one more thing to get lost ( or nicked)
Have just bought a big lockable knob thing ( yes, I know...) that will prevent the Ram mount itself from getting stolen, but no way I know of to secure the 660 itself to the mount, so have to remove it whenever bike might be left out of sight (like fuel station, or going for a pee)....which being an Airhead owner, one has to do very often.

You can secure the 660 with the touratech mount .. Its obviosly not completely safe but it will stop the casual theif.. I also have the lockable knob thing as well ..

Yep owt can be stolen if it ain't screwed, glued and protected with half a dozen rottweilers but where do you stop?

The mount for the 660 incorporates the power and comms cable, this would have to be cut rendering it useless to whoever was stealing it 'mind you' some of the scroutes out there wouldn't be able to work that out

As for the "rubber boot" used on the 550....Mine dropped off, all I ever did was blow away any rain before connecting, always worked a treat ....'Mind you' following the route is a different tale

I have ....... but very heavy driving rain in Norway. They are not 100% waterproof. It doesn't stop them working, you just get some weird messages popping up on the screen. It goes away when the unit dries out completely.

Again not a biggie and certainly not a reason not to have one.

+1 Got the message "unsupported device" on my 660 driving in rain out of Oslo a few days back. (The message was in Norwegian so the English wording may be slightly different). No problems other than that, but not perfect for a gps specifically designed for this type of use...

This is really worrying! I 'm not aware that there has been the same problem with the 550. Certainly, mine has done 15,000miles through thick and thin with no hint of a water ingress problem.

Just got the traffic receiver. I guess I just will have to try - plug - seal - all prayers heard - problem fixed. I'll report back

The mount for teh 660 is a completely different design to the 550 and I cannot see how water can get inside the mount...unlike teh 550 which left me stranded a long way from home...
The 660 is a good unit but still very "Buggy", particularly when used with an Autocom.

I have used my 660 on the mount in the very worst of the UK weather - this summer - and no issues. I have also ridden c. 300 miles in driving rain with just the stock cover on the mount. The 660 just boots up fine on clicking in the unit - no worries.

The 660 is a good unit but still very "Buggy", particularly when used with an Autocom.

I have had both 550 and 660.No water problems with either and rarely bother with the cover when not fitted. Never had any issues with Autocom with either unit. Absolute no brainer plug and play installation both with old 2005 Autocom and new 2009 one (on new bike)

My only real issue with the 660 is the Bluetooth is very fussy about which phone its connected to. It would not work with the Palm I linked to the 550 but is OK with a Blackberry 9000
