Weekend to Anglesey

After many years, possibly 20 years, I decided to give camping another go thanks to acquiring one of these instant tent things, also got a modern inflatable mattress (packs tiny but inflated gave 4" of comfort, a small but powerful air pump, and a camping chair. The alloy panniers doubled as a table. All in all it was a fantastic weekend and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Kit has moved on leaps and bounds!

the go outdoors site next to valley of the rocks, they share a bar with basic, but tasty food offering

Weirdly, I was talking to a friend the other night about camping. Knowing how much of a princess she is, I was expecting her to say how much she hated it.

However, she talked me through her equipment including a "self-inflating mattress" (however that works) and said it was really enjoyable.

My memories of camping revolve around bike trip 20-odd years ago with the resultant lack of space; tents that took ages to erect and pack away, sleeping on a narrow and very thin inflatable mattress that always meant I woke up on hard cold ground, without a proper pillow, and after three nights it was hell on Earth. I might need to give it a go with some updated kit.

It also helps when you can pick and choose your moments with regards to the weather. 3days stuck in a tent whilst it's blowing a hoolie with test most's resolve.

this is the mattress I used, they have a built in pump but I used a mini electric pump thats much quicker

only negative was at 68 years old it's a heave ho getting off the floor at times, panniers are great for leaning against

you will learn to camp near tables and chairs ( any sort ) or your bike , so you can climb up; them in the morning .

I was there myself this weekend albeit in a cottage. Had forgotten how nice...the nice parts are. Something special about riding through the Ogwen valley, then over the Menai bridge watching the yachts on the Straits.

It can become very busy with the sea kayakers if there is an event on. As in filled to the brim, but it is a nice site, especially if you go on the upper tier.

Another good site is at Moelfre, Nant Buchan Farm. It also gets busy and is a favourite with the campervan crowd, school holidays are to be avoided!

I prefer the one on the headland above the lifeboat station, Arfor Campsite. Get tucked in under the stone wall and it provides a good degree of shelter from anything with East in it.

Anotther vote for Nant Bychan Farm, very relaxed but very busy in the school hols. Curry night at the Kinmel Arms overlooking the bay very good too...
We stayed on Nant Bychan last year and enjoyed it (i know Anglesey very well as I have some family connections there). New toilet.shower facilities for the 2026 were being advertised for the site when we were there... plans looked good. Presume they've been built by now. We'll be staying (not camping though).
Not stayed at Arfor Campsite, although I know it.
