Weight limitations

I have the TT-Zega 41-35 system for my 1150 and I want to know if it's safe to load each pannier with more than the suggested in the manual 10k per case. And if the answer is yes how much weight is the limit?

Basically the answer is you can put as much as you like in the panniers. But the real question is where do you stop?

I have seen one rider with about 20 Kg in each pannier on his 1100GS. He wasn't carrying a pilion, didn't have a top box and had his tent and other light stuff where the pillion normally sits.

I think the 10 or 11Kg limits are imposed for structural and legal limitations.

I myself have had the panniers (2x41 Litre Zega's) with a total weight of around 10Kg's each, that included the panniers as I weighed them on the bathroom scales trying to balance each pannier with the other.

Trust me when I say that's a lot of weight on the rear end, especially if you add a pillion and the associated soft luggage like tent, sleeping bags and hair dryer on the rear rack.

If you don't want to break the rear aluminium spar, that sort of holds the whole rear end together, I would suggest you not overload the panniers. I've seen 4 of these crack and all were replaced by their owners in time, not something you would wish to happen in the middle of nowhere.

By the way, just what do you wish to carry, gold?

Mick.

Slider,

We normally pack everthing we need and basically common sense is in the order of the day. If you going to load 100 kilo's on the back of your bike + a pillion something is going to give. I reckon our tents, sleeping bags and luggage is in the region of about 40-60kg's at most and so far the only downside is your handling becomes impaired on the front wheel. I take good time to pack my bike and make sure it is well balanced even if it means something has to stay behind.

Here is a photo of our trip to Germany in February this year and it was pretty scary on those slippery roads with all the stuff on.

I don't profess to be the expert in loading an 1150 GS , but as being the guinea pig that Suzuki practiced on when they brought out the Suzuki Hayabusa , which had a uncanny knack of breaking the rear subframe at the slightest opportunity .....overloaded or not.....I suggest you proceed with great caution if you are going to exceed the recommended loads by more than 40 Kgs plus a pillion.

I still run my 'busa , along with the 1150, but the (replacement) 'busa now has a steel subframe.......I wasn't carrying luggage, I wasn't thankfully carrying a passenger , but the subframe breaking on a country road at 50 mph , put me in hospital in France for 6 weeks , with concussion, damaged spleen, 9 broken ribs, and a broken ankle , plus numerous small issues ..........overload at your peril !! things can break without the bike being overloaded so I wouldn't push it to much....

Out of court..........need I say more ;)

I think the bikes are a tad different!

Fortunately being a phantom flyweight of 17,5 st I can pretty much carry what I like. personally I wouln´t hesitate in filling the cases with what ever. I think you are more at risk from horrible handling than anything else. Long trips in dodgy terrain though is another thing.

The principal remains

Totally agree, but overloading is overloading......my Busa only had me on it , it wasn't carrying luggage, it was down to bad design, and 'iffy welding ......see the result!
I just advice caution !
