Weird Engine Noise

My 300 mile old GS has an irritating thrumming sound that kicks in between 2500 and 3000rpm. Difficult sound to explain really but it's a kind of whir-whir-whir that I hear constantly between these revs.

The only other bike I've had that made this sound was a 34K miler '94 Funduro, which at the time I thought was possibly chain/sprocket/bearing related but now hearing it on a shaftie and from the 3 miles collection mileage to the current 300 I naturally have to rule out the chain on the previous bike.

Does anybody understand or even recognise this kind of noise and what causes it?

not sure what it is but....

....a friend of mine is reporting a very similar thing on his 11 plate gs. He can hear his 'wierd noise' in 5th gear at around the 3.5 to 4k rev range. It doesn't happen in any other gear other than 5th. He has taken it back to the dealers who have acknowledged that there is 'something' there but they are not sure what. He is still in discussion with them so if I hear anything then I will let you know.

You sure its the engine? A lot of these bikes have this (mine included) at these revs but its the tyres and the rest of the bike resonating. If your running the tourance tyres then chances are that's what you have.

On another note, why are you on here being all worried about a 500 mile old bike? If you worried get it to the dealers.

It is running Anakee 2s, as was the F650 at the time.

On another note, it hasn't reached the dizzy heights of 500 miles, just 300, and who said anything about being all worried? I already said I will be having words with the dealer!

I may not even have to see the dealer ... there appears to be £3.5K on the table already!

i had a noise and a vibration on a 2010 gsa with a 1000 miles on it,the vibation was a bearing in the box that had gone big time the gearbox oil was very grey and contaminated,a complete new g box sorted that.when i picked up the bike it still had a wow wow sort of noise.to cut a long story short after swapping everything swappable over with other bikes they could not cure it or tell me what it was.the solution was for them to offer me a new bike which was allright by me.

My 2012 GSA has done that since new in March and now 2500 miles later still does it - also on Anakee 2's by the way.

I always assumed it was simply a characteristic of the bike. I'm with Marki_GSA on the resonance theory though and wouldn't worry unless something breaks or falls off

Of course there's a simple solution to all of this - ride faster.

No, 5th and top, and on the flipside autogs seems to have found a cure in so much as having a new bike offered! I am guessing his new bike doesn't do this anymore. That to me means something ain't quite right in the first place.

If only your solution was a solution, in reality it isn't.

I have one set of ears , and quite well worn too!
I have one irritating engine noise, that I am not worried about.
I have about 50 sets of ear plugs.

Should I put 49 sets of ear plugs in the engine oil filler hole and keep one pair back for me in case of emergencies, or stick 49 plugs in my single set of ears and just one set of plugs in the filler hole?

I sometimes notice it, never really put it down to one particular gear - It's just one of those resonances that happen under the right conditions, I wouldn't worry about it.

PS my bike has done almost 20,000 miles in 2 years and hasn't broken yet

It's the Anakees. Mine did the same. Changed them for Tourances
- much better. Still get it sometimes but I've done 30,000+ miles with it and no problems. Don't worry about it.
