After riding the travel bike around for a bit on NZ plates, I've decided it's time to give the old airhead some rest and attention. So I've started looking around at later model BMWs for touring the country and Europe, and a bit of commuting.

But INSURANCE! Is it really that much? It seems without insurance history here in the UK I'm looking at the best part of £1000 annually. Even the bare minimum third-party cover for a ten year old RT is hovering around £400.

Are these normal rates? Or are they hiked up 'cause I'm new here? I've been a full licence rider for 20 years, and it's not like I'm looking at hooligan bikes, but it seems without a NCB I'm screwed.

I am sure that if you have proof of a healthy no-claims bonus from your home country you will be allowed some maybe even all that bonus here, I think you will need to deal with a broker though and not via the internet.
It worked for me in France car and moto. :thumby:

Cheers, I'll give that a go. Not holding out too much hope, since everything I've read only references European countries as eligible, but it's worth a try.

Correct. So long as you have proof of insurance history they can access, you shouldn't have any problems.
Certainly was what I experienced when I went to Oz for a year, then Africa for a while and when I returned my premiums were unaffected.
