Decided to look at the rear splines after reading a few posts recently about them seizing, rusting etc, I won't open that cans of worms again but do need some help.

Final drive oil - 75w-80 fully synthetic does the brand make much of a difference also is it 180ml?

Now for the part which has me driven mad, this whore of a bolt rung like butter when tightening up, circled in yellow. Does anyone have a name on the bolt? 1250 GS 2021 model

On the plus side Splines were good :thumby:

Given you haven't supplied a model year, it could be one of a lot of options :confused:

There are 108 months of production on the watercooled varients

using the fact thats its also in the 1250 section brings it down to a possible 5 years worth of guesses ;)

Luckily it hasn't changed in that time

It looks very much like the paralever brace screw

If you supply the model year MYxx when your making an enquiry gets a search within 12 months if you get the month of manufacture as well gets it to 1 in 1

Now that ive calmed down and swallowed my pride ill give the full story:comfort

After reading the threads on bad splines I decided I'd have a wee look to check my own. Bought the bike new in August past and I have 3k on the clock. I know the bike is under warranty etc but I like to learn how to do general maintenance etc but as per usual I made a balls of the first attempt :blast

I didn't realise the abs sensor gave way to the final drive oil and had not removed the plug so I ended up with oil all over the disk and brake etc. I felt like a complete fool. As if it wasn't bad enough I decided to continue with the job at hand and when I got to the filleter head screw I wrung it (see pic)

So I sat there covered in oil cursing my stupidity.

Long story short I have another Torx set that always seemed to be a little tighter fit, nearly as if it was fatter T50 bit. A few gentle taps with the hammer and it shaped the bolt enough to allow it to loosen and tighten. Splines were in good nick, small bit of grease on them so gave a light going over. Reassembled everything and cleaned down the brakes with brake cleaner. then gave the bike a wash.

Ill order a new bolt and swap it out but she's ridable :bow

Next time, have a nice fat ear plug to hand to fill the ABS sensor hole, but at least you made the effort!

Note that there are two types of Torx, normal Torx and Torx plus. The Plus are slightly larger than standard Torx. Your larger set may well be Torx Plus. The profile is different. Lots of info on Google

Some great info there, thanks for the links and as for the torx I was convinced they were marked wrong but one is a plus as you say.

Well I never knew that. Every day is a learning day.

Yeh its a bit like cross head screws, you have Philips, Posidrive and JIS. All look similar but have different angles and profiles. Again loads of info on Google. Of course you should use the right tool for the fastener but there is a bit of latitude. I think (but check), that a Torx bit will fit into a Torx plus, a philips and JIS will fit into a posidrive - but the correct engagement will only happen with the right bit.
