West Coast of Scotland - Advice please

NW Scotland

Well, i've just read Tobers report on Scotland. And I'm worried. I'm going to ireland with him in June. " things are bound to happen. One, it WILL rain and two, He'll get upset at being beaten at backgammon again. Oh. And his bike will probabally break down!

Why am i doing this?????

I am just back............i set off after dinner from Leicester to loch lomond...glencoe.....stayed in Myrtle bank B n B(Ft Wm)........20quid(on my own with en suite)........cheeeeeeeeep!!
Next day after breakfast i set off to Nevis range gondolas....Invergarry....Skye.....round loch carron......over the pass to apple cross(eat lunch@applecross inn)....back over the pass....bainacra.....kinlochewe....Gairloch.....up to the lighthouse... poolewe.....falls of meassach......Ullapool........Inverness.....then go like fcuk to Ft Wm before its dark!!(again Myrtle bank B n B)......take a shower and get some beers down ya in town!!(this is approx.450miles)
Next day after breakfast and a stroll in town and then set off home.


Somehow my KTM950 made it(with standard seat too!!)

Just putting the finishing touches to our route on this one. Can anyone recommend a B&&, guest house or such like in Inveraray?

My wife (Kim) and I are going up to Fort William for a week of hill-walking and bike touring, leaving this Sunday (May 22nd). Maybe we'll see some of you up there. Kim has relations who live near Scotch Corner so we're staying with them on the journey up there and back: that way we can take the scenic route as soon as we leave the doorstep. From Scotch Corner we are planning to go: North to the next junction and then slip off the A1 onto the B6275 (north) to the A68 (north) through Castleside to the A69 (briefly west) between two roundabouts and then (north) onto the A68 again (briefly) to the first roundabout and then west on the B6318 running alongside Hadrians Wall to Green head where we pick up the A69 (west) for 8 miles. Into Brampton rather than stay on the by-pass and pick up the A6071 through Longtown to Gretna. Negotiate the complex junctions at Gretna Green to get on the A75 to Dumfries (avoiding the A74M). 4th roundabout on the Dumfries by-pass is for the A76 (north again) this takes us through New Cumnock to Kilmarnock. From there it's A71 for about 8 miles to Irvine and then the A78 is the coast road (north) to the Irskine Bridge. Over the Irskine Bridge it's the A82 (briefly) before slipping onto the A814 coast road through Helensburgh, along the shores of Loch Long to Arrochar and we'll do a quick right and a left and we'll be on the A82 on the shores of Loch Lomand. From there the A82 is the main tourist route to the Highlands (loads of caravan pullers to terrorize ) but it's a lovely road and I want to take Kim through Glen Coe.

Consider going to Gurock and taking ferry to Dunoon, this gets you on to better and quieter roads much faster.

I did the ferry to Dunoon last June (and met a GSer from NI) and the roads on the other side are much quieter.

Thanks for the advice. I've just been pawing over the road atlas and the Gourock/Dunoon Ferry trip is definately now on the agenda. Holy Loch, the A815 through Argyll Forest Park and along Loch Fyne and then the A83 back down through Glen Croe to Arrochar looks fantastic. I've even spotted a village on the edge of Glen Croe called "Rest and be Thankful"

Piscatorial delight and pixie dust

Visit the Pier at Oban, and find the fish restaurant on the first floor. It looks poor from the outside but is fantastic value with superb crabs, lobsters and other seafood. Another stop off must, this time for breakfast is the Loch Fynne seafood shop and restaurant, on a sweeping bend into or out of Inverary...their kippers are what God eats.

Also just south of Oban is a seafari, go on it, it's an absolute blast.
Finally, visit the white beaches near Mallaig...it's pure pixie dust.

I almost forgot, while God was eating Loch Fyne kippers. Jesus and Mary came in and bought two portions of Bradan Rost....give it a try.

We Just got back from an excellent holiday in Scotland and I'd like to say thankyou to you for the good advice on routes to take, especially Harry who suggested the Gourock-Dunoon Ferry; What a fantastic road that is along the banks of Loch Eck. We thought that the coast road to Gourock was spectacular but once on the other side of the water the holiday really begins.

Hi Lamble,

Sorry but I didn't read your post before leaving for Scotland. I was looking forward to eating some fine sea-food too. We didn't go through Oban but we did spot the Kippers restaurant on the way into Inveraray; we didn't stop, we were enjoying that lovely sweeping bend too much. Next time we will make an effort to do that. Thanks for the advice.

PS. I see that you are in Colchester. Do you like the B1508 between West Bergholt, through Bures and into Sudbury? That's my favourite road in Essex/Suffolk

Jeezy creezy, it's taken me ages to get back to you on this.

Do you know, I bet I do like this road, but I never keep a reference on road numbering, although the place names ring a bell and I've certainly ended up in both Bures and Sudbury on several occasions.

Do come along to the Essex meet at Maldon on the 2nd Thursday of the month, down at the Hythe off the Hgh Street (botom turn left) to the Queens Head, about 19:30-20:00.

As you missed Loch Fyne, you might like to know that they've open a restaurant in Loughton, or you can order on-line.

Thanks for inviting me to your meeting. I like the Queens head, especially the outside tables on a summers evening (on a night when the Morris dancers aren't there!). I'll make an effort to get there.
