just wondered if anyone has done a tour of the Western Isles using these ferries.. they seem to go all over, is there a classic route? what kind of costs were involved? and, how long did you allow? best wishes, Stefan

Everything you need to know is here: http://www.dutchman.org.uk/western_isles.htm

CalMac ferries do a 'Rover' type ticket which costs about £130.00 and you'll need to allow six days minimum starting at Ardrossan and finishing at Oban....

We did this trip 3 years ago.......brilliant!!

Cheers

Oh yeah

Did the trip a couple of years back ferry out of Ullerpool to Stornaway, road round Lewis, down thru Harris (really good) ferry across to n/Uist, Benbecula, s/Uist, watched England beat Germany 5 - 1 in hotel in Loch Baghasdail, it just don't get better than that! Ferry back to Oban, ferry cost approx £110 back then, total time on board approx 11 hours! Absolutly fantastic, as is most of the n/west of Scotland, made for GS's to eat sports bike's and we did, only one warning, MIDGES! only had one bad day, but I'd rather wrestle with angry croc's!!!! Have fun, regards Dusan :clap :bow :bow :clap

Dusan,
You should have called in on your way back down south. I could have let your tyres down :D

Did a very short trip to Lewis & Harris a couple of years ago. Left Dundee at 6:30, at Ullapool for 9:30 to catch the 10am ferry. Organised a B&B in Stornoway then went to see Callanish stones and Dun Carloway broch. Down to Harris next morning for look at the beaches :thumb then got the 4pm ferry from Tarbert to Uig. Back in Dundee for 10pm. Hoping to get back there again this year.

great pic's

Great pic's bgfind, just unbelivable place, no mobile phone coverage, on a bright but cold windy day, stopped off at the standing stones Clanish, stones were warm to the touch? felt magical? then recieved 14 txt messages 1 after the other! Weird, any one who gets the chance to ride these islands won't be dissapointed, regards all Dusan :bounce1

Your cheapest option is probably an Island Hopscotch ticket. Plan your route and look for a suitable ticket, there is bound to be one to suit. Full details on Calmac's site at http://www.calmac.co.uk They are good value too, e.g. a ticket from Oban to the Outer Hebrides returing to the mainland at Ullapool costs ca. £86 for a bike. That would allow you to tour 10 islands by a combination of ferries and causeways. I've done this a few times on my bicycle, but this year I'm going to treat myself to the luxury of my 1100. That should help beat the wind.

The pic below is on South Uist.
