Am I a total tosser or what?
I managed to knock my bike over today after cleaning it!!
I reversed up my drive and forgot the bike was still out, smack, crash bang!!! the bike went down after hitting it up the bum. however no damage to the bike what so ever, but a small dent on my car boot, which is fine, just glad nothing was wrong with the bike... apart from...
I picked up the bike and rode it into my garage and noticed that my front wheel looked like it was slightly out of line with the front mud guard and the handle bars where a bit out of line.
the bike fell on to it's right side and I guess the handle bar on the right took the blow.
I am thinking that the forks just need a bit of a loosen to get the wheel and handle bars back in line but I am NO expert on messing about with the mechanics of the bike so could anyone tell me what to do (apart from use my mirrors next time I reverse up my drive):hide

cheers

I doubt you've twisted the forks, unless you completely reversed over it! My guess is that you've bent the bars. In which case you'll need new ones.

I had a similar experience with my old F650GS where it fell off the stand whilst lubing the chain. It landed on my car (didn't even fall all the way over). Cracked both side panels of the dummy tank and needed a new subframe, all told about £400!

I sort of dropped/fell off my 650 about 12 months ago and had the same problem. The 1st thing I was advised to do was losen the bars and you may be able to straighten it up that way, they have probably been knocked out of true with no real damage. Cotswold BMW ended up adjusting mine when I had it serviced. I posted a thread on here at the time under 650/800 section but don't have time to search at the moment.

Sorry to hear about that! Always annoying when you do something stupid! I've gone to put the bike on the side stand and its not down! didn't do any damage but certainly felt stupid!

Hope its a easy fix!

Put the bike on the centre stand (hope you have one), then put a trolley jack under the bash plate (hope you have one), carefully take the weight off the front wheel. Then loosen all the pinch bolts on the triple clamps. Then tighten them up again (to manufacturers specifications). Drop down the front wheel (not the bike ;) ) and remove the trolley jack.
This way your forks should now be straight.
If you've bent your bars, you can quite easily measure that. Just pick some points on the forks and measure both sides and compare the distances.

Hope it's nothing more serious. :)

f800 spill

StopStop,
I had a spill about this time last year - coming from a minor to a major road, didn't notice the black ice on the crest of a hill. Dropped the bike with a slap on its side. After the 10m slide, I picked it up and checked it out. Like you, I initially thought all was ok until I sat up on the bike. I noticed the bars were a little off in alignment with the wheel so brought it straight to the dealer. Cutting a long story short, when they released the bars from the forks, the forks straightened. No need for replacement bars or forks. The alignment is every so slightly off, not actually noticeable without a forensic examination. Just cost me labour. :thumb

StopStop ..

Have you got fatbars on? If so they're prolly not going to have been bent by a simple topple like that..

Do all the pinchbolt thing, but be sure not to let the forks drop too far .. then loosen your handlebar clamps too.
My bike came from the ORS with what I thought were bent handlebars, but it was just a misalignment and releasing the tension on the bar clamps was what it took to let it all pop back into line.

thanksfor all the advice, and a trip to spec savers maybe on the cards:augie
I know the bars aren't bent and neather are the forks, so I will look at loosening the bolts this weekend and having a play.

maybe I should have titled this thread as "should have gone spec-savers!!"

FWIW, when friends and I used to ride dirtbikes extensively, it was common after the many minor "offs" we experienced to find the forks slightly "tweaked", wherein the front wheel was no longer pointing in the direction of the forks. Fork braces would minimize this, but it was still a common occurrence.

Anyway, we would find the nearest tree (or similarly immovable object), place the front wheel against the side of it, and reef the handlebars in the necessary direction to straighten things out... no loosening of bolts, etc. It worked almost all the time, the only exceptions being when something was actually bent.

Good luck with it, regardless of whatever method you choose.
