I'll be swapping the gearbox on my '89 R100GS for a rebuilt unit at the WeeKend do.
Might as well stick a new thrust bearing in while the box is out.
So, what else should I be ordering from Sherlocks?
4 stretch bolts
Thrust bearing

Do I need to get any special tools?

Now then

How do you know your box is on it's way out?
Mine clatters when going into second and less so from 2nd to 3rd. Is this a warning?

Bill, Does it have oil in the recon box??

Yes, I filled it when I received it :thumb

I have all the tools needed. I swapped the gearbox on mine last month and it was simple to do.

Thanks Sid, saves me a couple of bob.

if yove bought your box from sherlocks make sure theyve installed the correct output seal, the right way round.....
Got it from Rob Farmer, and he put a Paralever seal on it for me.

It's rather noisier than my other G/S, there are one or two false neutrals in it, and it's very clunky when changing gear.
The rumbling noise is quite pronounced when in neutral, and subdued with the clutch pulled in and I hope that changing the thrust bearing at the same time as the box will cure some of that.
I've not worked much on my bikes and cars for some years, and long gone are the days when I used have a big smile on my face as I lay in the road under my car in the depths of winter changing the clutch plate.
So a civilized weekend, in the dry, beer, food and experts at hand seems like a good time to re-acquaint (had to spellcheck that one) myself with the joys of greasy mitts.
