I want to fit new pads before my tour next month, with 10k on the originals I don't want to try and squeze another 4k from them.

Can anyone recomend some decent pads, I don't mind the OEM ones, but I assume BMW brake pad meterial costs more per kilo than uncut diamonds, so I would like to use some third party ones.

Performance is more important than life, or should that be life (mine) is more important than longevity :)

I have just changed mine at 24K. It depends how hard you are on the brakes as to how long they last but I still had some life left on mine. I changed because I felt they could be improved on. I had gone the EBC HH sintered route on my other bike and found them awesome but opted for Ferodo Platinum from the GS Shop (Steptoe's place) after reading some feedback on this site. Its still a bit early to give full feedback on them as I have only done a few hundred miles since fitting them but they have plenty of feel and have had to haul the GSA to a halt from speed once, loaded with camping gear and did the job well enough.

brake pads

+1 ferodo platinum from the gs shop(steptoe) but avnt fitted yet as my 2008 gs with 24000 hasnt finished eating the oe pads yet,and after two heavey euro tours i was expecting the oe pads to have long since expired ,but im not a heavy braker and use the gearbox an engine braking to slow situations down!!! :D:D:D

OEM give you the best feel

You should get 20k(ish) out of the (front) pads so at 10k I'm surprised you're looking to change them :nenau

I've tried Ferodo Platinums and thought they were pants, no feel and less powerful than OEM - got rid after 3k.

I've tried EBC HH's and whilst better still not brill' so got rid of.

Back on OEM and well happy even if they cost a bit more :)

FWIW I've used Carbon Loraine's on several bikes including currently on my Husky SM - awsome pads but need a bit of heat in them to really get going - might be worth a try if you want ultimate performance :nenau

It's well worth having a good look at them. 10'000 seems a bit soon to be replacing the oe pads IMO. They should last quite a bit longer than that. I have so far, reached 56865 miles on the original front pads and don't see them wareing out this side of 70'000 miles. But then I am very light on brakes.

Getting 20-30'000 should be about average for a solo rider including ocassional pasenger and touring use.

Please note; I'm talking fornt pads here :rob Not rears. As you may know already the earlier 'servo model' 1200s tend to munch their way through the rear discs quite regularly. :tears

+1 it ain't worth pissing about over a few quid

Ask Cookie about EBC pads on a 12GSA, he's got a set with less than 100 miles use:augie

Cookie can ride a bit and hated EBC, took them out @ 100 miles and replaced with OEM

As it happens, I do have a very lightly used axle set of EBC HH front pads. Yours for £25 inc. post if anyone wants to try them :)

I gave up on EBC pads in the late eighties  Ended up bining them and moving on to Dunlopads (the first cintered brake pads). The EBCs never wore down and didn't do much for stopping the bike either, where as the Dunlopads where a bloody revelation, brilliant :D

EBC brake pads are as much a false econnomy as Hagon shocks IMHO  Not the cheapest and work great for the first five minutes, they've gone off par by lunch time and become less than average over night. Then your stuck with them cos you ain't got no dosh left to buy propper ones. Been there, done that? Yeh, your not alone :blast

Thats the complete opposite of my experience. Oh well, just goes to show how unique we all are :)

DP pads are very good.

I have some in at the moment, but the deliver is very erratic and when they've run out it could be one week or one month until i get the next delivery.

Thanks everyone, I had just assumed that at 10k on them asking another 4k or so may be a bit much, perhaps I should go and measure them first.

Does anyone know hom much meterial they start with so I can get an idea how much as gone in 10k, if I have any doubts I will swop them out, can always use them up when back home and doing short runs.

Must say £40 for Ferodo's from Mr Steptoe sounds like a fair bet to me, the OEM stuff which looking at that review are by far the worst pads you could fit cost well over twice that amount!
