WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR HARLEY TODAY??

Close inspection shows rear wheel bearings are shot..... Also left hand saddle bag support bracket has snapped.... Only the dirt holding it together....

Still puncture turned out to be a leaky valve and an hour today with soap/water/auto sol turned a manky rear wheel into something more respectable...

Rubbed down rusty frame parts and painted in part satin and part gloss hammerite... see what looks best when dry.... Then pick the right one...

Research tonight shows the world of HD bearings to be a complicated one... Think I'll go Timkin....it all looks a bit old school as they need to be packed with bearing grease....

More to follow.....

I've done bearings and seals on HDs a number of times just give me a shout if you want any help. I always take the bearings out and repackag them when I do a tyre change.

Good luck with all the work:thumb2

Thanks Dave..:thumb appreciated..

The bearing is wobbling around behind the seal... So could be the packing has failed...I guess the bearing is shot but will hook it out to have a look see....

I successfully ...

... blew the 12V4W pilot bulb in the headlamp, while wiring in my newly acquired Zumo cradle & (hideously expensive) HD mount. The good news being that the bulbs are £2.49 a pair at Halfords, and my Zumo 550 now has ignition switched power :thumb

It's a tapered roller bearing and until the wheel is in with the spacers and all nipped up it will be loose. If there's side play in the wheel after that it could be shot.

No side play in the wheel.... In fact no symptoms or noise whilst riding.... Only recently passed an MOT not that that means much.... So, i'll pop out the seal, repack the bearings which look ok... Timkin is the make and see what happens.. Do you replace the seal? I have a seal puller so should be ale to get it out without damage....??

Sounds as though its ok then:thumb2
No real need to replace the seal if it's not damaged. I always do just cos I have new ones in the drawer and think that a new one might seal against water better especially if you use a pressure washer.
