What do I need to tell Garmin when selling ?

I am in the process of selling my SPIII and have read posts by Paneuropean etc that the buyer will need the "co-operation of the seller".

If / when the sale is concluded, what exactly do I need to let Garmin now ?

I think the best thing to do is just tell the buyer to contact Garmin to get the registration transferred, and then see what Garmin ask for (presumably they'll just want confirmation from you that you've sold it not had it stolen).

I need to do the same myself, having just bought a 2nd hand unit.

i bought a second hand unit, didnt do anything, works a treat

I think you need the unit registered in your name to get your second map unlock code. Also if you need to return it to Garmin for warranty repairs they might query if it's registered to someone else. Apart from that, as you say, it's probably not that important.

To the best of my knowledge, the only reason you need the "co-operation of the seller" when you are buying a used GPSR is to ensure that you get the unlock codes for the cartography (for use on your PC) at the same time you get all the hardware. The unlock codes can be easily transferred from one PC to another by floppy disc, memory stick, or even by email. You use the 'unlock wizard' on MapSource to make a backup file of the seller's unlock codes, then transfer these to the buyer's PC. Now, they can transfer cartography from their computer to the GPSR.

Garmin is not too concerned about who actually owns the GPSR. If you want to buy a cartographic upgrade in the future, when you log onto the Garmin website to purchase the unlock for the upgrade (the CD itself is free, but locked), you will need to enter your GPSR serial number. That will pull up the records for the previous user (name, address, etc.). I guess there must be some mechanism for updating this information when a GPSR has been sold to another person, but I don't know exactly what that mechanism is.
