As the title of the thread says, If I wanted to take a 1200GS off road what are the basic things I would need to buy to make sure it was properly protected from damage....well, as much as it could be protected with me riding!

Dave

Buy a cheap, second hand, light and proper trail bike for under a grand. It'll cost less than the damage to a GS after it's been dropped it a few times and you'll have way more fun and run rings around any off road panzer tank

DRZ,Serow,KTM,Ténéré ETC :aidan

Money.

(to replace all the bits you break when you fall off)

They're pretty crash proof....we have very few problems with them in Morocco.

If it has OEM foglamps, take them off, because the plastic brackets that they are fitted with are made of mild cheddar and will fail on the first proper bumps you hit.

I believe that the side stand switch has been modified now, but we had a whole rash of failures when they got hit by stones when they first started coming out with us.....there is probably a guard available by now, but there wasn't for a long time....it's easy to bypass with just a Leatherman and a bit of common sense though, if it fails on the trails.

If you're doing anything with ruts or badly uneven surfaces, it may be worth considering taking the screen off as well...we've had a few of those broken as well.

Other than that, go and enjoy...they are surprisingly competent off road and you'll have a blast :thumb2

Heidenau k60's,small screen, better head protection, folding gear lever ,loosen brake and clutch levers a tad, remove mirrors & top box, take a friend to help pick it and you up when it all goes tits up:eek:

Engine bars are useful - if you're covering a lot of loose stony ground they would be a necessity as just one can puncture your covers DAMHIK :D

Loosen or take off your mirrors. Saves replacing.

Other than that nuffink essential - just enjoy :thumb2

If you're going through deep water on a 1200 fit a snorkel or scrap your bike:thumb

If I was going off-roading....

....the best thing to replace to prevent so much damage would be me!! :augie

Fixed it for you...

Wot they said. :thumb
Remember what you are riding, don't get carried away, prepare to be amazed at what they will do, and laugh at what they won't (wet grass and deep mud spring to mind :augie) Always take a mate or two with you. If it falls with you under it, you could be there for a very long time!

Bigger muscles especially in the arms and legs and a course on how to pick the bike up without getting an hernia :hide
