What do you reckon

(Ok...seeing as you`re so in need of an opinion.)

There`s nothing you couldn`t feck up if you had one of those.

Indeed I was thinking I could snap all kinds of drill bits and tools wi' one of them but decided not to say....

er...:blast

With tools you get what you pay for and realistically you buy a machine like this to machine small parts with a high degree of accuracy.

It's a lot of potential kit in one bundle for not a lot of money. However if it doesn't do what a machine like that should do because it's cheap shite then it's a waste of money.

I'm betting there are lots of these at the end of work benches all over the land covered in dust having only been used once or twice after the owners had the shuddering realisation that all they were able to do was feck up anything they tried to machine with it.

I qualified as a toolmaker 20 years ago and as an apprentice bought cheap tools to see me through. Most of them ended up in the bin :augie

That sounds about right to me.

Most people get pished off with stuff like that, simply because they don't know what they're doing with it when they get it.If you know what you're doing then buy it and make things. If you don't,get a grown up to do it for you:thumb2

If I really needed a small lathe, i'd add a bit more cash and buy a second hand Myford. If you buy secondhand, using an educated eye, you can pick up some real bargains.

The basic lathe is only the start, it's all the little extra's cost the big money, there are some great deals to be had, but you will need patience, all my past machines have been bought via word of mouth contacts. Contact local modelmaking clubs or miniature rail enthusiasts often they have knowledge of kit available.

I have limited experience with lathes, but enough to know that cheap ones can be a real pain. Rather than one of those, I'd probably take that amount of money and use it buy a second hand one of a better/pricier model. 18 months ago would have been the time to do it. Lots of small places were going bust in the recession and things like this were being sold off cheap. That said, I still think there'll be a better second hand buyers market for these than usual at the moment.

Good luck.
