I gave up being concerned about asking daft questions and been thought stupid for asking them --- a long time ago.

Daft question.
When folk say they are using a phone Off Line ( no SIM or Aeroplane mode) for Navigation does this Navigation mean --
Being able to see your GPS Position on a Map and potentially the relationship to a Pre Loaded Route ???

but not receiving any instruction on how to get back on the Loaded Route --- if you are off it ??

======

I have started you a fresh thread.

Actually quite a good question.

Offline means you can navigate a pre saved route with turn by turn. You can also do a new “where to” route, all offline

Since you can just put in a destination and it will route I would guess it will also do off route calculations but I don’t know for certain

Offline routing (often associated with platforms like MyRoute-app / MRA) means navigating a pre-planned route without requiring an active internet or mobile data connection. Your phone relies solely on its internal GPS chip and downloaded map data to guide you.

How It Works:

  • Pre-Planning: You plan your route and download the required maps while connected to Wi-Fi at home.
  • Going Offline: When you lose cell service (e.g., in rural areas or mountains), the app automatically switches to the downloaded data so your navigation continues working.
  • No Mobile Data: You can use your phone in Airplane Mode to save battery and roaming costs while still being perfectly guided.

What You Lose Offline:

  • Live Traffic: Without internet, the app cannot route you around unexpected traffic jams.
  • Dynamic Recalculation: If you take a wrong turn in a remote area, the app might not be able to recalculate a brand-new path until it regains a connection.

Pro-Tips for using Offline Routing on MyRoute-app:

  1. Download Regions: Ensure you use the app's settings to download the exact geographic regions you are traveling through before you leave home.
  2. Synchronize Routes: Make sure your specific planned routes are synchronized to your device's offline library.

In essence:

Your phone always knows where you are.

You have saved (downloaded) the maps and the route(s) you need.

Via, for example, the MyRoute Navigation app, you can display the downloaded maps and the route(s).

Was in France when for a bizarre reason Vodafone suspended my mobile plan. I had downloaded West/East Europe Google maps to use if I lost mobile signal (in Rom happened few time in the mountains), no traffic info and no voice prompts (again bizarre) . If everything fails I always carry...paper maps. I know, old fashion :D.

So no off route recalculation while offline - that's good to know and could even be used to advantage

Pedant mode / on.

No, it knows where it is.

Caveat mode / on.

Only if you haven’t put it in a biscuit tin with your keys.

/ off / off.

Yes, MyRoute-app (MRA) Navigation will recalculate if you go off route in offline mode, but only under specific conditions.

Crucial Conditions for Offline Recalculation

To successfully recalculate without an internet connection, your trip must meet these three requirements:

  1. Downloaded Maps: You must have the HERE offline maps for your specific region downloaded to your mobile device prior to your trip.

  2. Proper Route Type: You must be navigating a pre-planned Route. If you are navigating a Track (a series of recorded points), recalculations may fail or display straight lines instead of following the road.

  3. Offline Settings: Make sure the Offline Navigationtoggle is actively enabled in the app's settings (Menu > Navigation settings > Functional).

How the Recalculation Behaves Offline

  • Next Waypoint Routing: Once you deviate and recalculation kicks in, the app will route you from your current off-route location to the nextupcoming shaping point or waypoint.

  • Traffic Data is Lost: Recalculation will use the downloaded offline map data. It will no longer take live traffic, hazards, or road closures into account.

  • Alternative Options: Depending on your route settings, the app may try to direct you to the exact waypoint you missed, sometimes advising a U-turn. You can manually skip missed waypoints in the menu.

Thanks for those replies.
Confirms my inclination that MRA Gold and Navigation would work for me with The Old Phone.

Indeed.

I run the Navigation app via either a sacrificial iPhone or an old Samsung. It runs fine on both. I run both in ‘Off line’ mode all the time, not least as neither phone has a SIM card.

But, in your other thread you talk about using an XT3. In which case, you possibly don’t need the MyRoute Navigation app at all. That said, I also run a bike with the XT too, often at the same time as the Navigstion app is running on my sacrificial phone.
