I'm thinking of getting some custom made earplugs - the ones with a mini speaker jobbie at the tip to allow me to hear my i-pod.

I've read some stuff on the forum about both 'UTIMATEEAR' and 'GREENLEOPARD' and know that some of the members have a vested interest in these - but does anyone have any firsrt hand experience of these or other custom made earplugs ?

I know the value of quality, 'made to measure' earplugs but at £150 to £200 I want to make sure that I get the best. They must cut out the right amount of extrenal noise (particularly wind noise with my Arai) but also give good sound quality and BE COMFORTABLE...

So anyone got anything good or bad to say about these earplugs ???

I had Cool Carbon make me up a set of his own custom plugs to take a set of Sony Phontopias. £40 to CC for the plugs and £30 to Amzon for a set of Sony Phontopias and for £70 I've got a set of custom moulded in-ear monitors.

So far, I've only used them connected to my latop to listen to Internet radio and on the bike to listen to Betty in my left ear. The plan is to listen to the alerts from my Snooper S6R Neo in my right ear when I've sorted out the hum loop created by running both devices off the bike's accessory socket.

I did about 300 miles last weekend with Betty giving me directions in my left ear. That worked very well. However, since I always wear a Coolmax balaclava under my helmet, there is a bit of pressure on my ears, caused by the balaclava pressing on the cable outlets on the earphones. Also the right earplug doesn't seal and keep out quite as much windroar as the left one.

CC has said that he'll quite happily investigate both of these slight problems for me. All in all they're an excellent deal and there's the added benefit of a trip to Perthshire to have them made.

Ultimate

I have Ultimate and they had to be adjusted slightly, but they are great with my Ipod. Still sorting the level on autocom.

I only got these because he was standing there at BMF to measure me up.

Great product, you will not be unhappy as they offer free adjustments.

Denty...do a search using the buttons at the top.....many threads and many opinions......both good and bad.

I have Ultimate ear monitors......can't fault the quality but there was a delay in getting them and a lack of contact from them......and I don't have any vested interest.....I'd get another pair from them if I needed some.

GL

Green Leopard are full size full shell plugs with musicians monitors fitted in, exceptional sound quality, can't speak for the Ultimate's 'cos I make the GL ones.

Arai are a very well made helmet but are the noisiest on the market, the Rx7 is the noisiest helmet of all, the cheaper ones are less noisy due to the lack of vents and such that create the noise. The open face Arai is much quieter.

They are comfortable enough to ride around the world with.

Two things to consider, 1. damge and/or pulling on the cables when putting the lid on, 2. Have autocom speakers fitted in the lid and use filtered earplugs, autocom speakers are very good.

er.....I don't have any vested interest....honestly!!!

IF I thought they were shyte, believe me I'd say so.......but they aren't......

expensive mebbe, and bright red....no, hold on, I asked for them in red so i could find them easily......

seriously, they are well worth it if like me you do big miles and like your music....and if you want to go down the autocom/talkie walkie route for comms, them some form of in -ear speakers are essential...can't speak for the others 'cos I haven't tried them but there we go.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I don't use an intercom and merely want the earlpugs to cut wind noise (I have the 2nd most expensive Arai and it's noisy !) and listen to i-pod/mp3 player (I'd prefer a radio but reception seems to be a problem with the walkman types).

I also want the earplugs to be as comfortable as possible. I thought the smaller custom made 'in ear' type would be more comfortable than the 'full size' as they would get less pressure from the helmet (mine's pretty tight - can't even use sunglasses). I'm also concerned with potentially damaging the connecting wires when putting on/taking helmet off. Other people's direct experience seems the best way forward.

Denty,

I have both full ear plugs and in-ear monitors and you are right to presume that with a tight fitting helmet the fuller ones may cause you a problem in the comfort department.

My tight fitting full face is fine with my in-ear monitors but my full ear plugs make things a bit tight in there, however they are the plugs of choice for my more usually worn Schuberth Concept.

A provider of custom moulded should provide you with your plugs whichever way up you want them, mine did :thumb
