Got the Hepco bars fitted and I have dropped the bike four times since I picked it up last October. No damage to the cylinder covers but the bars are scratched. The latter is easy to fix with a bit of sandpaper and Hammerite.

Also you don't need to take them off for servicing. :thumb2

What happens if the bike falls on the left side then? :nenau

The BWM offroad school teaches a different technique which I think I'd prefer. If for no other reason than I've tried it a few times whereas I have not attempted the above approach.

I wouldn't get too worried about trying to pick it up. You're better off worrying about the cost of repairs ... that and the other tossers rushing to get their digi cams out!

Like I said - get the sidestand down before you lift if it's on the RH side, and if it's on the LH side, wait until it's high enough and then flip the stand down.

I've had 2 zero-speed drops with my GS, one on each side, and this technique works really well. It's easier to pick up the 1150 using the face-backwards, lifting with the legs technique, than a GPX750 while facing forwards. I agree that the BMW offroad school technique is the way to do it when you're on slippery ground, but anyone who drops the bike on tarmac should try it this way first.
