Can anyone recommend a decent (and above all affordable!) GPS. I had a look at the BMW Navigator system for about oh let me see, how long did it take to register £1395?????? Whats all that about?!

I have an IPaq and I know I can get car systems to fit this. Is the same possible on the bike?

Depends what your looking for and how much you have to spend. I have a Garmin V and it is perfectly suitable for motorcycling. I paid £240 for it last month to replace my old Garmin 3+ I'd had for almost five years. If you want a unit with a larger screen, color screen or both the sky's the limit as regard both specification and cost. I like the smaller cheaper units as I tend to just leave it on the bike ( I can't remember ever taking the old one off the bike) so if it gets nicked or damaged it's not the end of the world.

If you already have an IPaq, look at either a CF card GPS or a GPS sleeve (like the Navman 3300). Stick it in an Otterbox and mount the otterbox on a Ram mount.

The biggest problem with PDAs is keeping them waterproof, which the Otterbox solves quite neatly.

I have a PDA + mouse + TomTom + custom made bracket as my GPS solution, and it is rather cumbersome, with too many wires. So if I had to choose again, and I already had a PDA, I would get a Navman sleeve, probably.

However, a Garmin GPS is much more robust, and easier to use. You can get a 2610 from Aspidshop.com for 570 quid, I believe, so that's much more affordable, or a Quest for 420. The advantage the Garmin units have is that they are already waterproof, so you don't have to find a solution for that.

Here's a pic of my setup:

If it's your first GPS, you could do worse than get a Garmin Quest.

Have a look in the "GPS Info" forum. At the bottom of the technical section where you posted this.

Also keep your eyes peeled for second hand bargains ... The Garmin Streetpilot 3 is pretty good, and there seem to be quite a few for sale, as people upgrade to newer models I assume.

You can currently get the Quest for £345 from GPS Warehouse.
