I’ve finally succumbed to this GPS malarkey and I thought some of you might be interested in the setup.
Rather than go for a dedicated GPS unit I’ve purchased a GPS Bluetooth receiver for my IPAQ PDA along with TOM TOM 5 and Fugawi.
The TOM TOM and all it’s maps are loaded onto a 4GB CF card and provides street level routing for the whole of western Europe.
Fugawi provides the Ordnance Survey 1:50000 landranger maps and requires some pre-planning work on the PC to load the relevant map sections and plot waypoints. I keep all this on a separate 256mb CF card.

To mount it all on the bike I've used the RAM Aqua box 2 courtesy from our very own RAM-MAN Steve.

The Aqua box 2 is strictly a little too small for the IPAQ 2200, but if any of you own one of these devices you’ll know that one of it’s less endearing qualities is when the side-grips fall off.

With these removed the IPAQ fits snugly into the lid of the aqua box.

And the GPS receiver slides in behind.

The box fits perfectly to the bars, and all touchscreen functions are accessable through the Flexi-lens of the Aqua box.

All in all a pretty neat set up. However, at this stage it's withoout power and audio.

Power and audio

For power and audio I need to get some leads made up. Once these are done they can be fed through the back of the aqua box and permanently sealed in.

Hi Paul,

Back today. Thanks for this and I have already spoken to *J* regarding this and he is of the opinion that a Vreg is needed and most likely will not fit inside the power plug.

I have sent *J* your link so he can see what's needed.

Oh dear .. since we last saw each other, Oldham did not tame the Chasetown 11 and now face the Brentford bees in the next round of the FA cup, but I will not let this blur anything :D

Since your map shows the centre of the Lancs universe, I had the best ever ! fish-n-chips from the little chippy on the main road in UpperMill.

Cheers for that Steve.
Can't the V-reg/resistor be wired anywhere in the harness. It doesn't have to sit in the plug, does it?
Saddly the little chippy in Uppermill has gone the way of many a traditional chippy, it's now chinese and only does frozen fish.
The special house noodle however, is out of this world!

Paul,

I spoke to *J* who has read your posting and the sketch (it helped), *J* reckons the Vreg will not fit inside the plug and may use a QPAC casing , anyway he will reply to me and I shall pm.

How did you finally power this up?

Help... ...

I want to go down the pda route for gps and work management. You guys know your stuff and I know nothing about either - or fixing and wiring to the bike with the otterbox. :eek

Can anyone tell me who can sort me out :nenau - where to purchase, what software, what mounting requirements etc AND undertake to do wiring up?

I know its a tall order but I am going to use professional help to get the lights sorted so the same applies here. BTBR has a 'self help template' for light parts and where to get them so he pre wires and then fixes etc. Is anyone able to do this for a bike mounted pda?

Preferably in the south although if its done like the light bar I can assemble bits and then ride out for the wiring and fitting.

I just want the thing to work!

USB

Mine is now powered by USB.
I'm delivering the 5vdc via a vreg.
I nolonger have to carry seperate chargers for everything. Just a USB lead for each item.

Hi Blowzorn,

which model BT GPS have you used? I've got a very similar setup, iPAQ and TT5, but use a complact flash type GPS receiver, which won't fit inside an Otter box. I could be tempted to lash out on a new receiver if I know it will fit inside a box with the iPAQ.

BTW, mine is powered using a ciggie-lighter type of iPAQ power lead plugged into an adaptor that converts the BMW type of plug to ciggie lighter socket. Works fine, and the lumpy bits fit under the seat of the 1200GS.

I'm currently using the TomTom Bluetooth GPS receiver1.
However, now I have the USB socket setup, I'm in the process of purchasing a SIRF STARIII hardwired receiver that will be permanently mounted to the bike for power and will connect to the IPAQ for data via the USB socket.

Hi Blowzorn,

Can you please tell me how you wired up the USB into the battery, and how the 5vdc reg works?

I probably dont have the skills to do it myself, but may ask my local electronics shop if they could solder it up for me.

Thanks,

Mike
