What is an EWS error?

Hi all, to be honest this is on my RT but I'm guessing GS would be the same. I got my 1200RT out to start up, has not been started for a while. It did actually start first go. I then decided to give the bike a wash and when I finnished I went to start her up again and it wouldn't turn over. There was a message on the display saying EWS. Had a quick look around the bike for something obvious but nothing. Tried again and it started. Out of curriosity I tried it again later and this time EWS showing and again it will not turn over. Can anyone offer any info on this please?

Its a problem with the ignition key antenna - the immobiliser to you and me.
A chip in the key 'talks' to the bike electronics via an antenna ring around the key slot.

Do a search on here and you'll find it was (is?) a common problem.

EWS ring failure, not uncommon.

It's a security arial that sends a signal from a chip in the key to the bike's electronics to start the bike. No arial, no start.

Best to get it to a dealer to sort out as getting to the ring to replace it is fiddly, as it is held in by security bolts.

You can do a work around by getting a new ring, disconectong the old one, plugging in the new one, leaving it dangling and taping a spare key to it.

Mine ground to a halt a mile from home recently with EWS and gear indicator confusion showing, but a new battery fixed it. The spare EWS will continue to be carried, or possibly fitted at my leisure, which is what I did with anew FPC.
