Hi all, I am looking to give 2017 KTM 1290 Super Adventure T a go. So will be booking myself in for a test ride this or following weekend.

What are they like? (compared to GS/GSA LC)

* Reliability
* Corrosion
* Service intervals (6K on a GS is annoying)
* Insurance cost v GS/GSA LC
* How do they compare on tyre wear compared to GS? I've done 10k on my GS using Metzeler Tourance Next tyres and still got probably 2-3k worth of life left in them.

I know that post purchase customer support is crap in comparison to BMW.
What else to think about if say I was on a market for one?

Regards

EV

If you want a good bike, but don't mind crap residuals, shit dealers, and shit after sales service, go for it.:thumb:D

Reliability is a can of worms. I will say they are good and mud will be along in a second to say they are the worst thing ever!

Haven't had any corrosion and haven't used any acf50 my GSA suffered from it even with it.

9k intervals.

Tyre wear, you need to learn where the throttle is unless your talking km ;-) The SA isn't bad at all if you keep the TC on but 6000 miles was all I could manage on my GSA and the SA is the same.

As far as customer support, it completely depends on your dealer. I know it can be sketchy at best but then my dealer couldn't be better. Always a cuppa and everything done without any hassles. My dealer is a bike dealer though and not a dirt bike dealer like a lot of the KTM shops are.

As to the other what really matters stuff. The engine is warp factor in comparison to impulse drive. It's better handling and stoping and feels way lighter. I am not saying the gs is a bad handling bike it isn't just the SA is better. The boxer engine is crap in comparison though.

Only you can decide if you will like it as a package though. I will guarantee you will grin when you use the throttle though!

I'm just testing it, it might be not up my street at all, I already don't like all that bloody orange plastered all over them. It probably be mental anyway.

Buy a GSA...

Deffenately a number one on my list but as I do allot of miles per year, I need something with longer service intervals, ownership of two bikes is out of the question as go no space to keep them and cost of running them on the road will outweigh the cost of 6k service on a GSA

Africa Twin is another contender. 8k service intervals is the only thing that would make me buy one. I am not a fan on how it looks.

I've ridden a few KTM's and they're good bikes. It's the other reasons I gave that stop me from buying one. At the moment.

The owners are very sensitive, as well.:comfort:D

I'll be changing the XR this year, and would consider a 1290GT if there was a dealer close by, and KTM didn't keep discounting the bikes whenever they fancy. I know people say that worrying about residuals is missing the point of the bike, but I run my own business, and change bikes regularly, so it's a strong consideration.

I'm intrigued; what's orange on the 1290 :nenau

Are you old enough to ride one, they're quite fast you know?

Have you ridden one? I had one for half a day last year, and really liked it. I'll be looking at them at the bike show, as I'm interested to see if there are any updates this year.

We can chat about it in depth when we meet up. Meanwhile I'll give it a go and see what it's like. I might return 5 minutes later chucking it at the dealer and be on my way with my GS.

Make sure you get one for a few hours, or a day even.:thumb

Piss off popeye! Yes I am old enough, and orange isn't a colour for everyone, only Dutch have this thing for orange fecking everything. It certainly isn't for me. I know SA does come in white (ish) and thank god for that. If it was anything like every other bike KTM offer then feck me!!!

I sat on one at 2015 NEC but it didn't feel right. Perhaps because I was so focused on getting a dream bike, GS.

If it was me I'd be waiting for the 1290 super adventure S to come out (not sure when that'll be ... early spring??) and test them back to back.

My impression of the 1290 super adventure T (as it's now known!) is that it was a great bike but too big and Bentley continental-esque for me at the moment. I'm still up for something a little more nimble. When I retire and want to spend my weeks and months away hammering Europe, then it's the sort of thing I'd consider ... :thumb2

(The AT and the 1290T are like chalk and cheese .... )

I anticipate they will be as one of them is ~1000cc and the other ~1300cc and goes like a clappers. I prefer cheese over chalk any day.
