He keeps sticking his head up over the parapet.

Regarding the Op - If you're kind of person that chooses a bike based on tyre wear, I can't see the KTM being the bike for you. Similarly Nutty and residuals.

What are they like? (compared to GS/GSA LC)

* Reliability
* Corrosion
* Service intervals (6K on a GS is annoying)
* Insurance cost v GS/GSA LC
* How do they compare on tyre wear compared to GS? I've done 10k on my GS using Metzeler Tourance Next tyres and still got probably 2-3k worth of life left in them.

* Reliability - Dunno, I think pretty good compared to the perception / comments (predominantly from people who have not owned one) only done about 5k on my 2016 1190S. Was not impressed with the issues my 2008 GS suffered with and if I expected a KTM to be worse I would not have bought one.

* Corrosion - I tend to look after my bikes and rarely have problems, the KTM looks very well made and has impressed me with the amount of grease around the Swingarm and other small touches that suggest they are put together with some pride (or the accountants have not messed with the Grease Robots programming yet)

* Service Intervals - 9k is good for me, had many bikes with crappy short intervals that can mean two services a year, or a 3000 mile trip means you need to service the bike after 2,000 miles - no such issues here.

* Tyre wear - Pointless question, give me your GSA on a free loan basis and I will shag a pair of tyres in a 1000 miles, the KTM is approximately seven or eight tons lighter than the GSA so should require far less force to push it along at the same speed, if your topping 10k on a rear tyre on any bike larger than 50cc you must have more than enough restraint not to use all of the KTM's extra power all the time. I don't think I got much past 5k on any rear tyre on my GS and I thought I was quite smooth and steady.

* Insurance costs - if your old enough to own / consider owning a GSA then the KTM insurance bill will not be an issue.

With the 2017 models all having the 1290cc engine I would suggest riding one of those as well, not sure what real world benefits the "T" (as it is now known) has over the S model which now also comes with Cruise Control and Semi Active Suspension. Unless you just love having the most massive bike you can find - I prefer the lower weight of the base model. I assume the T will have a bigger tank, but the 23L of the standard bike gives a decent range (judging by your tyre wear rates I think you should get about 250 miles to a tank.

You might find a leftover 2016 SA at a massive discount, or a low mileage late model that could be an even better bargain.

So far my dealer has impressed, but early days and nothing has gone wrong, I am sure (with any brand) some dealers will be better than others (and even can come down to the individual you deal with on the day)

It is rare I want to buy the same bike (or slightly updated version of it) again and I already fancy the 2017 KTM Adventure S.

Depreciation is to be expected, you will find someone who has put down £2.5k on a £15k GS and will spend another £5k in payments just to hand it back 3 years later a whopping £7.5k out of pocket tell you how much you will lose on the KTM :blast

The smart buy is to wait until a discount appears, or to buy one of those worthless used bikes :D But I think you will discover the depreciation is not all that bad when you try to buy a used example.

All big bikes cost big money, £ for £ this one will put as many smiles on my face as any other bike, having bought it with a big discount I am not expecting a horrible loss, but I am sure whatever it costs me during ownership will be fair value (possibly excellent)

The only thing I miss from my GS / Super Tenere days is the shaft drive and lack of fork dive (on the GS) but the extra ride quality, speed and lack of weight make up for it every time I have to...

Push it somewhere,

Ride along a great road

Ride on some rough road,

Pop off a quick overtake,

Upset a sports bike rider.

Pull up alongside a load of GS's

Where have I caused bother? I said the bikes are good, let down by the dealers/ KTM.

You, on the other hand, just snipe and slate the GS at every opportunity. Why?
Not in the GS section I don't where you come into the KTM section and let your mouth run off about something you have never owned, why?
I have owned a GSA and it fell apart with all the usual problems so I think that qualifies me to have an opinion in them.

What's you excuse?

Actually.............yes, you're right! :rob I AM the alternative, leftfield bikermate. Phew, thanks for pointing that out Paul!

It's people like ' New Bike Every Year PCP Nutty' that are the marketing man's dream :D

Andres

PCP? Every year? You're confusing me with someone else.:nenau

He did have a quick spank on mine ..
I spoke to Cato afterwards and Cato told me that Nutty rode him like a girl ..

I did. I was scared.:comfort:P

As I've already said, I've not owned the current bike in question, but have praised the bikes, and even said that I like them. Did you not see that?:nenau

I have spoken from first hand experience of the dealers, as I have dealt with the three closest to me, and they've all been shite.

The OP wanted opinions, and as this is a forum, I have given mine.

Calm down, dear.:comfort

Well I can say this. I don't think SA is for me even though I did like the heated seat. Cruise control is abysmal, hated it. Hand grips are for kids hands, dreaded chain maintenance (can't be asked), the throw of a shifter is as long as my sleeve. The menu is so bloody intertwined that you can get lost in it for 10 years and get out the other side a really old man.

Loved the noise that motor produced and a grin (forced) that it put on my face and 9k service intervals. Windscreen was better than the one on GSA as standard.

I can't say that after riding two hours it made me feel like I should buy one. More like feck, I want to let go of the handlebars now, as my hands sore from these stupidly narrow grips with stupidly oversized bulges on the end...... auch......

Fair play for having a go - KTM's are not for everyone ;)

Not sure I understand the problem with the grips - I have size XXL hands and never had a problem on my 1190 :nenau

Agree with the cruise control - did not like it on the 1290 I tried. Latest 1290S and 1290R have a revised system on the left hand side so may be better.

Sounds like gear lever needed adjusting to suit you.

Menu - you get used to it quick enough.

It has a chain but you knew that before the test ride :blast

Enjoy your next BMW :thumby:

Hi Ev how's you ?
have you banged your head or something, Ktm's are only good for going across fields:D
Stick with BMW and up grade to a GSA tc if you want a proper one
fuck the toilets

I tried 1190 and grips are totally different shape.

The new 1290 Super Duke has a cruise control on the left so the 1290 S will have it same according to salesman.

Re: gear lever adjustment I didn't know about that but in two hours I rode the bike I piped out of 1 in to neutral more times than I can count on my fingers. It's the case of getting used to it and by the end of it I did. However i walked away with a tight calf muscle.

Menu I am sure you are right but I figured menu on a GS in a matter of few clicks as if I had the bike for long time.

Yes I knew about the chain from the start and am still prepared to put up with one if everything else about the bike was to be just so.

I will try the new 1290 SA S when they become available to demo.

Will look into 2017 Africa Twin before I slam a hammer down on my next bike.

Hello Paul, no I haven't banged my head, it is just a question of having to spend money either or......

I always think a couple of hrs is not enough for a demo you need a day, redline loaned me there SA for the day and I went to skeg for fish n Chips however its like anything different, you hate it to start with just like when you upload the latest iOS it's shite and totally out your comfort zone but you get used to it and everything is then irrelevant.

Adjust lever one notch down and that sorts the throw out, the cruise I agree, it was silly of Ktm to stick it on the right however I use mine fine now, the menu screen is frustrating but once you set your favourites it's easier to access then the GS WC on screen functions, I only find the heated grip selection to be a bit long winded having to got into 2 screens to change

I've adjusted my chain once in 5k yeah I have to lube and clean the chain but I knew that when I brought it.

The new 1290s has up and down quickshifter with auto blip, it should be a riot

Blimey, where the feck are you? Why is it snowing. Where I am it is very mild. Enjoy your TC testing.
