What is it with UKGSer that uses so much CPU?

Do you ride a 1200? If so I'd start there.
No software in my bike thank you.

Strictly airheads. Think that's the problem maybe? :P

Is it because on UKGSER you are typing with 2 hands

Not like the other sites you visit :) :D :D :D

Problem found and fixed!

I have the answer :D

For the record, I'm on XP SP2, with Firefox 1.5.0.8 running, and a measly 512BM of RAM (it's a nice Tablet PC though!!).

As a test, I stopped all applications and just ran Firefox, pointed to UKGSer's "new posts since last visit" search. Just the one tab open.

CPU usage was up at approx 50% just viewing the page with no other activity.

I then installed an extension called "Flashblock" from http://flashblock.mozdev.org/ and restarted Firefox. Loaded the same page on UKGSer. CPU usage sat stable at 5% or so.

I then disabled Flashblock and CPU usage immediately shot up to 50% again as soon as I hit a page refresh. It stayed constant at about 50% with no other input. Flashblock can be enabled & disabled without restarting Firefox by the way. I let it sit there for a while and then re-enabled Flashblock, did a page refresh, and CPU immediately dropped back down to about 5%.

This is very evident in the picture below.

So, it seems that there is some Flash lurking around. Flashblock is meant to put an icon on the screen where it replaces the Flash content, but I couldn't see any icons anywhere. Strange.

Andy,

There is no Flash lurking in the background. The forums just use php/html pages and a MySQL database keeping the whole show together.

My current CPU usage while typing this with numerous applications running and FireFox with 7 tabs open is 0 -5%

Hmmm - definitely something strange going on.

Anyway, I'm happy that Flashblocker has somehow solved it. Ours is not to reason why etc...

Thinking it is some flash or java application too. Did some tests on two pc's I have - laptop with Win 2000 with numerous tabs open on ukgser, cpu usage is approx 5-8% but on my home pc using XP it was showing 30% usage. Today, on XP, it is on 15% but this is the first site I visited. When it was on 30% a day ago the java icon also popped up in the task bar suggesting some program was running in the background. Go figure...

i think this is all linked to scripts that run in the background

get a scriptblocker - and just allow ukgser to access scripts and all is fine.

but behind the scenes there is stuff running - who's that ?

and also the skype icon in people's sig - what does that do ?

Hmm, Firefox seems to think there is Flash somewhere - installed Firefox on a fresh machine and get a popup asking for Flash plugin to be installed :nenau

In your control pannel, go to user cp and then edit settings and turn off user avatars and signatures, then see if that stops the 'flash' :nenau

My CPU usage went up earlier and I noticed it was trying to contact skype as someone had their skype link in their signature.

Good plan. I already have avatars switched off. Will switch of signatures on Monday when I'm back in the office and do the flashblock on/off thing again.

I've always considered that Avatars and Sigs are a waste of screen space so never normally have them on. Tried with them on and the FlashBlock thingy enabled to see it that might indicate where it thought Flash was being used but no help.

Try it now Andy...... Clive discovered that the Blue theme still had some old code that was calling a site that contained Flash. When I was checking things it didn't occur to me to check all themes :(

My fault totaly..... but I'll blame Steptoe :D

By golly, that's it!

I am indeed using the Blue theme. Flashblock disabled, and no CPU increase.

I'll keep Flashblock anyway as I like being in control :D

Thanks Paul.

Yup, all fixed here too.

Thanks guys, for finding and fixing the problem!

Cheers,
Michel
