What is that noise?

I modified my screen by extending it with a piece of perspex. Now i hear more engine noises, bugger.
I am not worried about it though, its always done it and i am going to put on a louder exhaust.
i am curious as to what that noise is exactly.
First i thought it was the gearbox. the whine/whistle gets louder as i accelerate and the frequency goes up. but if i pull in the clutch it goes away.

if i have the clutch in and open the throttle i hear the noise. by my reckoning its engine related. i remember reading the injectors can be noisy (i can't find it now, and i did search). I wouldn't have thought that the fuel pump would spin faster as the revs go up.

if anybody has any thoeries i would like to hear them.

the bike is a '04 ADV.

FUEL PUMP

If it seems even louder when you are really low on fuel then its the fuel pump and yes there was an earlier thread about this.

I know NOTHING about mechanics/electrics etc but surely if you are revving the engine then you are supplying it with more air and therefore more fuel so the fuel pump will have to work harder/faster. Just like your heart when you run instead of walk?

I may be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

Noises....

With a higher screen you will also be magnifying some sounds, have you ridden your bike with no helmet on (safe place obviuosly)?

The alternator will produce some noise especially when under load. There is the cooling fan attached to the alternator pulley for drawing air through the alternator to keep the internal temperature down a potential noise generator. The alternator drive belt although mechanically efficient can also produce some noise if a little slack, squealing if too loose.

Electric fuel pumps tend to whire or drone a little (not helped by the tank resonance) and the injectors produce a light clicking sound. Couple this to some very 'kin' big pistons galloping up and down in their cylinder bores and you have a recipe for some serious noise, not to mention the antiquated valve mechanism rattling about doing its opening job on the valves. As the valves are largish when the valve springs close the valves there will be a few taps heard from them to!

As you say you are not bothered by it so ride on in bliss.

alternator fan

i never thought about the alternator fan.

i rode a clapped out r80st before becoming a flash git and buying the ADV. i am used to all the clunks, bangs, wotsits but not the whine.
