I don't posses any camera other than what's on my iPhone and feel I am missing some awesome one offs I see on my travels. I have been following Chris McKay (apologise now if I have spelt his name wrong) on The Stelvio Pass which I thought great use of a sport cam. So I am looking for the best one to use on my trip to Australia in February and on my bike when I return in March.

Anybody out there with suggestions or sport cams to avoid. There is also the fact I am 63yrs old can use some modern technology but would like the camera and computer interface for looking back at footage to be simple as possible :rob

Any advice would be most welcome:beerjug:

Malvern I already stated my ignorance on this issue, what is a DSLR?

Digital Single Lens Reflex - A traditional style camera. ( a box with a sticky out lens which can be changed) as opposed to a compact.

If I understand you correctly you'd want a camera to mount on the bike like a Go-pro or GArmin Virb...and a zoom compact for off bike pictures etc?

Sorry, yes that is what I meant, I tried to keep the question as small as possible i.r. less words. Maybe I should rephrase the question. I am looking for a camera that can be mounted on a motorcycle and dismounted to use as camera to record visits to spectacular places or static to capture other events happening around me.

Hello Spencert...

The camera I use on my trips is a Drift Ghost HD.

This is really good for mounting on a motorcycle as the lens rotates, so if you mount it somewhere and the lens is not vertical then you simply rotate the lens so the arrow is pointing up!!!

Mounting options are fantastic if you choose mounts from here..... http://www.rammount.com/Products/MotorcycleMounts/tabid/128/Default.aspx#/

It can also be used as a standard camera with many functions, although not as good as a proper camera but its not bad.

For pictures I sometimes use my editing programme to take a "snapshot" from my videos.....the camera in video mode takes 30 frames per second, you have the ability to choose any of these 30 frames contained in that second to take a still image from.....its a good feature..:thumb2:thumb2

As with any piece of electronic gadgetry, it pays to play about with it and learn the functions...:D

Chris...

Delboy has a Drift 170 in the items for sale, it's not sold at the moment.

Chris, are the drift cameras waterproof?

Batman,

Yes they are waterproof and submersible to a certain depth, this is without buying any accessories.

There are 2 "hatches" you can fit to cover the connections, one has an opening to connect an outboard mic, and the other has no openings and is waterproof.

Chris...

Spencert, I have just bought the Drift Ghost can't wait to get out on the bike to try it out. What swung it for me was as Chris says "the lens rotates" also the quality of the footage that he shot in his vids....Fanatastic!

If you don't want to splash out and don't need all the capabilities that the Drift Ghost has, then there's a sale on at Lidle, they have an action cam for less than £80 including all the mounts and a 4gb card.....Got to be worth looking at.

Hi Jacal
Thanks for the info on Lidles yeah as I live in France we are often in the branches looking for their promotions great shop for wine and chocolate too. I think I will hang on until February as we stop of for 4 days in Singapore and my research tells me I can pick these things up cheaper there.

I hope you are having fun with your new toy. Check out the Drift website there is a tutorial fall almost any application you may want to use it for. Plus I am sure Chris McKay who appears to be a master on the device would share his knowledge. We may be able to persuade him into giving us ((the technophobes like me) a masterclass ready for the summer, what do you think Chris? Or am I presuming too much for a complete stranger?

There seems to be pretty unanimous support here for the Drift Ghost - what benefit does the Ghost have over alternatives such as the GoPro? I've been thinking about purchasing an "actioncam" for a while but it's a minefield of technical jargon that just leaves me confused!

Stu.

I was of the same mind Stu, it can be a minefield and IMO I don't think there's any one better than t'other, so the size, (didn't want it too small with fiddly little buttons) the ability to rotate the lens, quality of footage, which is on par with the rest and not having to buy an optional remote was a big swing for me, Oh and it must be said that the vids Chris as been kindly sharing with us was also a big factor. I've also seen some great stuff shot with the GoPro but I don't like the telly tub look when mounted on the helmet and all the extra's can soon add up.

If your looking for some comparisons try "Techmoan" for an independent review of loads of Action Cams.

I have a GOPRO and a drift ghost s, the gopro stays at home as I always take the drift.
It's waterproof without an extra case, has a screen (optional extra on the gopro) and is more aerodynamic that a gopro if mounted on the helmet... Plus as mentioned earlier.. The lens rotates so giving more mounting options.
With a little £8 piece you can even use the gopro mounts on the drift

Spencert....

I am in total agreement with Maz....the Drift just ticks more boxes for the motorcyclist...:thumb2

Thanks Chris that's very decent of you. I left home in France today with my mind set on the Ghost S only to find the comment in the previous reply above "the stealth has a build in battery" which means it cannot be exchanged during filming. So unless my missus has ordered (was going to hang on until Singapore need to get familiar with it) it looks like the ghost for me.

Hi Chris, I don't know anything about action cams but I would like to get one for next summer, if your videos are anything to go by, you are the man to ask for advice, so do you mind if I ask how do you think that the latest new smaller Drift would compare to the Garmin Virb Elite HD Action Camera?

Hello Batman,

Both cameras will serve you well, not really much between them apart from the following....

The new smaller Drift Stealth (as Spencert pointed out) doesnt have interchangeable battery facility, so if the camera dies on you you need to recharge it, much like a mobile phone.

Where the Drift will beat the Garmin is the rotateable lens which really is useful when you want to mount it on your mototrcycle.

If you are after a smaller camera then you will need to make the decision based on the above, perhaps a better option would be to go for the standard sized Drift Ghost, which will tick all your boxes and it really isnt all that much bigger!!....:thumb2
