Being of a mechanically sympathetic bent of mind, I wonder what the minimum length of ride is, when concidering going out for a blast.
I've probably read too many horror stories about oil taking 20 miles to warm up, emulsion occuring in the oil due to short trips, batteries not charging for the same reason.
I understand that boxers warm up more quickly than water-cooled.
So any guidance or views gratefully received!
Cheers, Michael.

Don't come back until the exhaust headers glow 'cherry red'

Then you'll know the oil is up to the correct temp and it's safe to return home:thumb

I'd love to stay and debate this, but I'm running a bath...

actually, while I'm on, how long should I let it fill up for, and what kind of baby oil should I use?

...as long as you're back home in time for your tea, you should be ok..:thumb2

Sorry - you shouldn't be allowed out of your room............... :blast

What wrong with this forum.
Mfish may be new to biking or with only a few posts under his belt new to BMW flat twins. If you don't want to make a civilized comment why bother making any at all.

The questions are quite sensible,
The answer to one question is air/oil cooled bikes take longer to warm up than water cooled bikes. It take about 6 miles in 10c ambient air for mine to warm up. If I reset my mpg meter I average about 35 mpg for those miles. If I reset it hot the subsequent mileage is 57 gentle use. A week of commuting in cold weather with a 5 mile run to work but plenty of traffic lights sees the bike down in the mid 40s.

Hope somebody else can help Mfish with sensible answers.

Because it ISN'T a person called 'M Fish'

It's a sad serial wind up merchant who has recently been known as Deeley amongst many other names :blast

Stick around a bit and you'll see how it all works :comfort

Jimmy packer? Blimey I feel like a Sado some days posting as my self. Whats the real deal with him?

You know, once a fake id is outed, it'd be great if the user table in the database flattened them down their known handle. That way the ignore tool would catch them too.

Idea #2 super-ignore. Any thread with a post from someone on your list disappears.

Idea #3 top 10 ignored users list...

Maybe I need to start a 'question for the moderators' thread. :augie

Thanks to all for your input.
Sadly it isn't a wind up, M Fish really is my name.
if my question caused any offence, apologies.
Cheers, Michael.

For a realistic answer...

My trip to work is about 3 miles, and I was seeing some emulsified condensation in the sight glass during the really cold weather (10w/50 - 2011 bike), but it always cleared up on a good run at the weekends.

I think I saw you on the telly once or twice.

Are we gonna get any nice warm days to go out and play anytime soon ?

It's not worth getting all togged up this weather if you're going to any less than 50 miles :D
