My laptop is around 6-7 years old now and I want to save up a few pennies and get a new one. I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to whats what so what is what nowadays? I'm looking for something that runs graphics-heavy software (photoediting, etc) and has a good screen. I know the default option is a Mac (see previous thread) but I really, really can't afford one of those. Oh, and I don't think my Open University course work is compatible (but happy to be proved wrong). So what do the collective recommend? Budget is up to a grand.

Alternatively, anyone got a MBP they'd sell to an impoverished student? :D

An MBP would be my preferred option. (on one now)

You may find a few for sale as Apple are updating their lines today so in the next few weeks, those with cash burning a hole will be replacing so you might get some good deals on ebay.

possibly a laptop announcement, but i think today's event will be mostly about iOS6 and maybe a new iPhone, but new macbooks are definitely on the way so prices for the older ones will fall.

just bought a Lenovo A6 vision AMD ideapad
awesome performance for the money - took me two months to pick one and boy am i pleased with the result.
Its IBM rebranded I believe, one of the biggest manufacturers in the world, i'd never heard of them!
Best laptop ive ever had

I got an HP Pavilion g6 from PC world the other week and very pleased.

£420 and it pisses all over my 8 month old desktop !

Just in case you do go Mac, I run AutoCAD on mine with parallels, no problems.

Not rebranded - IBM sold that part of the business.

That said - I still buy them by choice. Not sure if my decision to purchase one of the top-spec ones and use for 3 yrs is the right one.................

Probably best to spend £600-£700 and replace every 18months?

David,

this is my Sony Vaio.

I had to access the case because it was overheating , caused by this!

Mouse and keyboard requires a certain knack.

All QWERTY tabs are still in good condition.

I have decided to sell it though as an upgrade is due! Make an offer , you never know , but there is no carry case so
you'll need to buy one. :thumb2

I got one of those about a year ago.
No idea how it compares to anything else but bought it from a nice friendly salesman in John Lewis.
Cheaper than that but maybe there was a sale on or some special offer.

Did that come from the upside-down lama in your avatar? And forgive me if I don't make an offer...
