2014 GS has just had the 1000km check.

Have done about 100km's on it since the check and it has developed an irregular cracking sound. Only noticeable at idle and sounds like the loud ticking noise you might hear with hot metal cooling...but the engine is at normal temp and the ticking is irregular...it is like someone is taking a small hammer to the casing and tapping it once every couple of minutes? Happy with the "noisy" engine but not this new sound.

Any clues? Forgot to ask if any adjustments are made during this first check...thought the pretty much change the oil, check the codes and then your off.

I'm going to take it in tomorrow and let them hear it for themselves

I have this and the dealer said it was nothing to worry about. It sounds as if something is expanding or contracting in the exhaust system. I would be interested in hearing what your dealer thinks it is.

Engine decompression device. At idle, sometimes it dips to its operating rpm. No issues

I'm sure the dealer will be able to help. It's odd that it's only started since the first service but without hearing it....

Good to hear thanks. This happens to be my second GS WC. I returned the first one for a replacement....don't want to have to do that again :)

There is no better bike all the same...mind you I do have a soft spot for the 1150

Right been to the dealer...has no idea. Head mechanic in Aussi for the week so says bring it back.

We had a listen and heard nothing for about 3/4 minutes then the cracking noise started. He thinks definitely from the right bank area but hard to pin point. I thought at one point it might have been just header pipe expansion but seems to coincided with a hiccup in the idle.

Been out riding this afternoon and when I pull up at the lights it's a real cacophony at times. Not at all something I have heard before.

What is this decompression device and would it only operate on one side?

Ah well seems to go well enough...just hope im not doing any damage to the motor.

Will have some more next week.

perhaps close your eyes and just listen as you load that vid.

the fella cannot hold a camera to save his life.

.

pistole i think you nailed it for me...thanks

that seems to be exactly the issue I am experiencing. It's a freaky sound when you hear it in the flesh. The video doesn't do it justice. I have read the link though and the description reads almost identical. It would be nice if the Dealers would let us know of these things in advance and save some trouble...particularly if it is regarded as "normal"

The sound comes from metal on metal...would love to see long term the results of that impact and where to look for it.

Many thanks...you always worry that you've blown so much cash on new tech only to spend time returning to the shop again and again, which was the case on my first new GSWC.

Ive heard it on mine but never really worried about it, I did wonder what it was but as it goes well and have now done 11,000 miles assumed it was normal. Thanks for posting though, as now we all know its normal.

Look the trick is to put your ear plugs in prior to starting and running the bike, I've got the quietest running and noiseless gearchange of them all. :thumb2 ;)
