What mileage do people typically declare when getting a quote?

I was regularly doing 15 k PA, that has significantly reduced to 5k for a number of reasons but I will saying 8k, if I ever get through on the phone.

FFS….. the only person who can answer that one is YOU. You should know how many miles a year you are likely to do.

I just insured by Be Moto and I put down 5k.

It’s unlikely I’ll do more but if I do I just need to phone them up (They’ll charge extra but it’s proportional so if it’s near the end of the year it won’t cost much )They don’t charge per se for policy changes so that’s a plus.

I did ask the guy if it made much difference and surprisingly it does. If I’d put down 8k it would be 40 quid more.

Always quote them exactly 1 tenth of the maximum mileage you will cover .

For example ; if you normally cover between 10,000 - 12,000 miles then state 1,200 miles for insurance purposes. If it ever becomes an issue then just point out that they have missed a zero off the figure that you will have stated. Give them evidence that you regularly cover over 10k miles so why would you in your right mind say 1,200 miles , I mean it’s a pretty odd figure right ? :thumb

This will be recorded on your policy… which also tells you to check the details….. clever eh!

I know it wasn’t obvious but I was just joshing......it was a pretty daft question so I though a daft answer would be more appropriate :P

When bods moan that their insurance provider has the bare arsed cheek to charge them £40 for some trifling mid-term alteration, they can comfort themselves with the knowledge that it pays for having some bored insurance chimp polishing their nails, whilst a bikermate questions and debates quite what an estimated annual mileage might mean.

The mileage increase is possibly only £8. the £32 is the undeclared hidden admin cost.
Admin costs can be hidden in many ways. Typically it can be done in rebates. IE any additional add ons throughout compiled together within a financial year could be 500k in charges to the consumer. The insurance company can then claim a % of rebate labelled as something else except admin. Happens with suppliers more than you realise.

Cars are a classic example and other items with 0% finance. Manufacturers give the dealer a bung - effectively a rebate based on volume of sales

There is no free lunch - costs whatever they are have to be paid for, either as you go or upfront.

No, this was the quote while I was arranging a new policy

I put down 5k miles and the quote was £300 if I'd put down 8k it would have cost me £340.

While I was on I got the difference between having a disc lock and not (zero) and confirmation that my wooden shed was okay for storage (backed up by the policy document)

Comparison sites are fine for an initial estimate but the slightest thing out of the ordinary and you're better calling them.

They ask for an "estimate". Does an insurance company equate that straight to "limit"?
