Guys and girls, after many years of wanting a large GS I am going ahead and trying to get it as my 50th birthday present to myself. Sadly my finances are not great and the choices in my budget range are low. I've got about £3000 to spend plus my very shabby F650 to either part ex or sell. There are one or two early R1200GS with high milages that are shabby that pop up about this price but if anything goes wrong I'll have no money to get it fixed. R1150GS are in this bracket some look great but the quality and price vary. There is also a couple of stunning R1100GS that crop up but I wanted to get something newer than my 2000 x reg F650.

Firstly what in your opinion is the best bike to go for on a budget, 1100,1150 or 1200?

Apart from clutches on city bikes around 40,000 rear drive bearings and ABS problems any major issues to look out for?

I'm with JB. You should see what Mikeyboy did with his 1100. Linky His is brilliant.

I'm not suggesting you have a project but shows that if you get a 'tired' one for decent money, the rest of your budget could bring it up to buff status.

1100 or 1150 GS, no question

Forget an early cheap 1200 GS

100%.

If you watch all the ads and have a deposit ready to go, you should be able to get a nice or really nice condition 1150 Adv with what you have.......condition is more important than mileage up to about 90K or even more.

You'll get a good solid 1100 for under 2k, a minty 1100 or a decent one with all the luggage for 2.5 to 3k, then you're into the overlap between lower end 1150GSAs and good 1150 vanillas.

£4k well spent will get you a 30k mile bloody good condition 1150GSA.......DAMHIK ;)

1150

Plenty nice 1150's high mileage is not a issue plenty second hand bits to keep you going not as technical as the 1200's more agricultural like a two wheel tractor
Best part get a workshop manual and you'll find most basic stuff you can do yourself good luck

With a bit of looking, my money would be on a vanilla 1150 to give you the best bang for your buck.
