This is what my head looks like now that I got the timing wrong. I've got 4 days to fix it before going away

Ouch.

Will you get away with just doing a couple of valves?

Yes. It was just the inlet valves that were bent. So, them, a couple of gaskets, and 3 days labour and it was sorted. Excluding 2 days lost earnings to get it done in time to go away. Ouch !

How did you manage to get the timing wrong Mike? i thought these engines were almost idiot proof if you followed the workshop manual?

Its not me proof:blast

Actually, I was doing the shims using the cable tie method and didn't realise that the chain had moved in the bottom of the engine. The top aligned ok. Also, couldn't get to the TDC bolt hole to look at the mark with the bash plate on. Would have been easy to remedy and certainly won't happen again. First time I tried anything like this and got it wrong. Hard lesson.

Actually, I just bought that spare engine that was on Ebay. I am going to rebuild that on the bench and LEARN !

Hard lesson learned there. Always rotate the engine a few revolutions manually before hitting the starter button.;)
