What Off-road tyres should I be considering?

Right, bought a GS for off and on-road antics, (as I can't afford two bikes:(), and now looking for a set of suitable off-road tires.

I'm looking to get some green lanes in, nothing desperately serious, (have done some stuff in my Landy around Salisbury plain), but need some tires that will be an off/on-road compromise:confused:

There is a bike tyre place just outside Milton Keynes, think its on the A5 just north going towards Towcester.very competitive.

Or I used Wheelfit in Cambridge after being recommended, 01223 425831, again very good on price for Tourances.

On the road,

In the dry there are very good levels of grip an feel. (_much_ better than you'd expect)

In the wet grip tails off a bit - (the tyres HATE wet cobbles). On a quick stop the
ABS could kick in where it wouldn't with a road tyre.

The different levels in wet/dry grip are more that what you would get with a road only tyre.

All in all a good road tyre, I only replaced mine so I could try a 'proper' road tyre
(I only got the bike Last November) and save dual sport tyre for when I _really_
am going to go green laining.

The first ride with them made my wonder "what did I do". It was a rough ride. Once they got rounded, as guys told me on this site, they were fine.

They are not as smooth on the Hi-way, and when it's wet out. I take it easy.

The only time I really notice the difference on the street, is on Hi-way once I get over 60 mph.

If your main riding is on the Hi-way, than I would not put then on. But hey, they do look really cool on the bike.

I have been dualsporting my GS and the bad Forest Services Roads here, have Rocky sections and Wash-outs like you wouldn't believe. The TKC-80's are really nice to have on those roads / Goat paths.
 
OK, to put a slightly different angle on this, what about a TCK-80 on the front only?
I'm off the the Peaks this w/e and looking for my first taste of the off-tarmac stuff, (easy stuff:augie).

Wouldn't recommend that . . . . if you want a compromise between Tourances and TKCs try Heidenaus

This is exactly the same situation that im in. I have part worn tourances on the 1200gs at the mo - thats what it can with when i bought it 2nd hand. However, i work for michelin and every year i either get 4 car tyres of 2 motorcycle tyres.

So i was gonna take the plunge for Anakee 2's - are they any good? Im not sure i want the tkc80's as i imagine they squirm quite a bit on the road and id be unsure of their ability of tackling heaps of water on normal tarmac - something they'd be on quite a bit.

So, since they're free, i may as well go with the anakee 2's.

Having said that, i could quite easily fit the car with new rubber if the anakee's are crap. I suppose the alternative is Sirac's?

Any thoughts chaps?
 
I rode my 1150 and 1100 on TKC's for a few years and really love them (except when they let go in the wet and it cost £3200).
I then put the 1150 on Anakees and didn't like them, they didn't seem to inspire much more confidence in the wet and certainly didn't seem to like over banding or white lines (especially French ones :eek:).

If your going to ride some trails I'd go for TKC's and learn to ride on them.
If your only ever going on tarmac I'd go for a proper sticky road tyre.

I ride on the road monday - friday with the odd off-road excursion on way back from work and then usually a morning or afternoon at the weekend in the mucky gloop!

I did hear that the origanal Anakee's were not the best but then some really rated them but it would be the Anakee 2 that i would be getting but im not sure how they differ.

If i worked for Metzler and not Michelin then i would be fitting the Tourances as i reckon they're mega.

The other thing is the TKC80's speed rating of 99mph - i dont want to be changing tyres before the yearly euro tour for when i want / need to get places in a hurry.

What speed do you tour at?
When on holiday and loaded I tend to ride slower and steadier than when I'm commuting and playing locally, not many times I have ever been over 95 on a GS anyway.

I like to get to my base quickly and maximise time i have there for touring around. So to go from Zeebrugge to Lake Garda i need to melt it. A steady 110 isn't uncommon - just the way i like to do my holidays.

I presume, like most tyres, brief spells of over the recommended speed are ok but im not sure just how long id like to sustain that.
