Looking to tart it up a bit what paint do people use to repaint the wheels (silver) and engine ect and do you use under coat

Cheers

Hammerite recommend primer under the Smoothrite on alloy.

Surface preparation is critical.

I got the Smoothrite off a web site, heavily discounted, sorry don't have the link on this computer. Halfords had a hal price promo in June, don't know if it's still on.

Need to do a few fins on one side, what do people recommend a spray job or paint it on?

According to the Halfords site:

FEATURES AND BENEFITS OF HAMMERITE DIRECT TO RUST METAL PAINTS

Colour - Silver
Can be applied directly onto rust metal
No need for primer or undercoat
Corrosion resistant
Hammerite forms a superior barrier that not only seals out moisture but gives long lasting protection both inside and outside

All this only applies to rust - ie. iron oxide. You are painting aluminium alloy which is a different thing entirely. Hammerite make a 'special metals primer' which is specifically for alloy and galvanised surfaces.
Having said that, hammerite does seem to stick well on CLEAN alloy without a primer.

Never used a primer with Hammerite on aluminium myself and never had a problem. Just "wash" the item with enamel thinners before applying the paint (I use a clean brush that has never been used for anything else).

Likewise (although I use panel wipe rather than enamel thinners to clean off before painting). I've had good success with silver smoothrite spraycans. Lots of thin coats with the drying between coats helped along with a hot air gun set on low heat.

As always with this kind of thing, it's the prep that counts.

looks good i got some hammerite smooth in silver is this the right stuff as could not find anything with the words smoothrite on ?

Yes, hammerite smooth is smoothrite. At one time the manufacturers only made the hammer-type, and called it hammerite. Then they introduced the smooth type and called it smoothrite. Then they changed the name to hammerite smooth.
That's marketing for you!

Wot he said :thumb2

Just taken a look at my can - it says 'Hammerite Smooth' :blast I can't get out of the habit of calling it smoothrite ...

The 'satin' finish black is good for other frame parts etc. I repainted my handle bars with it and it looks good (better than a gloss finish which is too 'shiny').

Just got a tin of black and a tin of silver at Halfrauds. Together with a can of ACF50 from ebay to make sure she stays tip top. Going to do the main stand as well.

Just remember not to try and put too much on at once. Light coats, allowed to dry in between, is the way to go. Put it on too thickly and the paint will run.

Yep, made that mistake spraying a clutch cover on my FZR600 in 1993, taking your time makes the job so much better. I was so much younger then, I have now purhased a Bimmer!:eek
