What size Data Card for Morocco Map?

After reading your post, I downloaded the maps, installed them in Mapsource and using the map tool, clicked on all the map tiles in that mapset. The map tab in Mapsource then showed 88 maps, totalling 5.90 MB.

On that basis, an 8MB card will take all of the Marokko-Topo maps.

HTH :)

Now I have established what card size I need I now need to get the maps onto my GPS. Having read the sticky about downloading maps I am a bit concrned re: the comment that if I put new maps onto the unit the old maps will go.

The 278 has preloaded maps of Europe with no built in memory (hence the need for the card) - am I right in thinking that if I downlaod the morocco topo map onto the card via the unit as they are built in the preloaded maps will be ok?

What I want to be able to do is use the preloaded maps in europe and then go onto the Morocco map once I get there (assuming there is a way of switching between maps on the unit)?

Many thanks

Nick

What size is the datacard that you have in the unit at the moment? With a largeish card, you'd be able to load the UK & Europe maps you need and then add the Marokko-Topo ones. Or you could just load the Marokko ones onto a separate card and switch cards on the boat.

I think the 278, like the 276 uses Garmin data cards .
If you upload new maps to the card, you overwrite the maps on there.
You need to get another card and put the Morocco maps on it.

64meg is the smallest card, I believe. About €59 on fleabay.de

No, he should be able to add maps to his existing card so long as he doesn't exceed its total capacity.

You're only out by a factor of 8 - http://www.navcity.co.uk/GPS Catalo...lank Mapsource DataCard___362.htm?Description

Probably best to back up the data on your card before you begin writing other mapping to it.

Have a look on the card, Garmin mapping tends to be stored in two formats on their units with internal memory (and my old i3 with a data card does the same) and are named 'gmapprom.img' and 'gmapsupp.img'. If you write to the card from Mapsource you will create a 'gmapsupp.img' file. This is supplementary mapping to the primary mapping 'gmapprom.img'. If the file already exists then it'll get overwritten, that's why you should back up your card.

Both files can be renamed as the other so you can create a new 'gmapprom.img' file be creating a 'gmapsupp.img' from Mapsource and renaming. However you can only do this if the mapping in Mapsource is fully unlocked to your GPS.

The safest way, as others have said, would be to use a different card for your Morocco mapping.

Never been able to do that on my 276c. Not with Mapsource. Maybe you could impart some knowledge:)

From the Mapsource help:
NOTE: Pre-programmed data cards (Garmin, SD, micro SD, etc.) should not be used in the USB Programmer or in a GPS Device for saving MapSource maps. The preloaded data will be lost. If you have a BlueChart or Fishing Hot Spots data card in your GPS device, remove it before transferring maps sets to avoid losing the preloaded data. If you choose to overwrite the preloaded data on a BlueChart or Fishing Hot Spots data card, Garmin will not replace or recover the lost data.

Well Schtum:bow, I should RTFM a bit more!!

You are correct. Make a mapset of the Topo's and upload (I made a 36meg collection of my local area)

Then make a mapset of the CN maps and make sure they do not exceed the size of the card, minus the Topo mapset and minus a bit more for routing data and upload those.
In the Map Info menu, it shows both mapsets selected:thumb2

Love it!

Cheers,
John
