What the heck is this noise from my rear end

I noticed a strange noise on my GS on friday - if you are on the centre stand and lean on the back of the bike, just as the wheel touches the ground you hear a clonk as load goes on to the back wheel, I noticed the swinging arm bearings had slop and could feel that wobbling about at the end of last summer - I tightened it as a stop gap before getting round to check / replace and thought that was the noise again - so touching various bits as I put light load on and off, eventually felt slop between the housing where this bearing is - the clonk feels and sounds like one you get when the shock or linkages on many bikes has slop in it - but its this bearing has had it on my bike...

does your have any noticeable play ?

I feel no play in the bearing at all, if i am not sitting on the bike and just walking it around the garage then i still get the same sound, getting on and sitting on it does not make any noise at all until i move it

The bearing you have shown is the equivalent to the part number for the pre-2010 GS.
I have had a PM which made me think that I may have over simplified the description as you will need to find or make a suitable press tool and make or machine a suitable plate to support the bearing housing.
I have just noticed your location. Do you have a BMW dealer close by.
The BMW main dealers were issued the tools to remove Drive flange to carry out the recall , ( which was change the ally drive flange to steel). This has to be removed first to remove the bearing.
If I did not have the tools to hand I would remove the wheel and the bearing carrier plate and take it to the dealer and see if they would swap it over also change the inner seal behind the bearing whilst at it. The large "0" ring for the bearing support plate should be re usable.
When removing the bearing support plate note the place of the 2 large shims that will drop out.
But first make sure it is that bearing. There may not be any play in the bearing if it has run dry.
Use a stethoscope or length of rubber hose to identify exactly where the sound is coming from as someone wheels the bike.
Not sure about MAP gas, You need a lot of quick heat to dismantle I use oxy propane with a pepper pot on the torch. and on re assembly put the drive flange in the oven and the crown wheel assembly in the freezer.
Again my disclaimer this info is for a pre - 2010 GS.

Thanks for giving a fuller description not a job for me i don't have the tools or heat, I do have a Motorrad dealer 45 minutes away so i could go and see them to discuss what they can do first of all I will talk to the bike shop who sold me the bike again tomorrow. They did say there mechanic had had it all apart and could nothing wrong, well i can tell you that is downright lie, none of the screws on the rear drive have been touched so i doubt they did anything.

Do you have a centre stand on your bike?

Do the rotating test on the centre stand wheel on etc etc

Just see if you can feel roughness while rotating the rear wheel slowly?

Does it only happen in your garage ?

If you replicate the heat etc Will it do it on smooth ground ??

P.S. Moving my own bike yesterday, That Donk in the video? Was that your stand "Donking" up against the stops

Get the wife/mate too put there hand on the final drive bearing as you push the bike along..
Going by the bearing squeky sound they should feel if the bearing clonking is present..

You can feel something going on not just the sound, yeah the donk is me knocking the side stand at the end, I haven't tested it outside of the garage i suppose i should in case the BMW gods have something against me lol, I just don't really fancy riding it though in case it lets go. So I came accross these guys https://jtc-motorcycle.co.uk/ who apparently rebuild the rear drive anyone heard of them? Or recommend someone to do it? I can bring it to the UK later on and get it done then if I have no joy here.

Just put a little 'dob' of paint on the screw/bolt head and then onto the adjacent component. If they take it part, the paint thread will break.

Evidence of 'we took it apart' or 'they did not take it apart'.

I agree with known good, I have one option to explore here where someone might be able to help will know more tomorrow or Tuesday latest I am going to talk to the dealer tomorrow as well, I really don't want it going back to them I now have some extra scuffs on the exhaust and the bar ends i repainted are now chipped. I will give Mikey a shout too, the big problem with shipping stuff in and out of where I live is customs and taxes can check out the couriers too, i was planning on a car trip to the UK later on this summer but that kills riding season

As suggested if you can find a way to get it to Mikeyboy and the dealer that supplied the bike to help with the cost it would be ideal, Good luck.
Will be interested to here Mikes verdict when he strips it down.

Well I kinda lucked out I have found a guy over here that specializes in all things BMW bikes, and has all the factory tools to do any job on any BMW bike, he doesn't advertise and his work is very much word of mouth fingers crossed he can do it soon. I will let you know what he finds in due course

So I am now about to recieve back my rear drive unit fully rebuilt all bearings, seals etc. The prognosis is that it had previously been repaired/apart (for what we don't know) there was some water inside where the bearing sits (on the non oiled side) the seal in this area was twisted which we think was caused by the bearing seizing up and somehow splitting and moving the seal. I will get it back on Saturday for now have a look at some pics, all parts that have been replaced are BMW parts the cost 500 euro inc a new rear disc and some pads
