That strange black plastic thing that sticks out over the back wheel??? It looks like a bumper, or possibly some sort of splash guard.

What is it's purpose???

It's a cleverly designed device to make GS riders look well hard by deflecting road crap forward onto their legs when riding through puddles....

Not sure what the laws are regarding having no rear mud guard where you are... but I replaced mine with a drop down flap where my plate is...

I understood it was there as it was a legal requirement in Germany to have some form of mudguard over the back wheel.

PS I don't think it looks that ugly.

+1 on the ugly. I replaced mine with a Mudslinger and a number plate extender at the back. Works for me.

think its something to do with some crappy eu law saying that if the number plate is over a certain height then the wheel has to be covered or somehting like that, its all pants really,
mine came straight off after i bought it and replaced with a mud sling!
and yea, is f ing ugly!

Didn't like it to start with - Now not bothered...

Initially it was removed (not by choice, long story); installed a mudsling and a ruggedity roads number plate plate, I gotta admit it looked pretty sweet. But I got a another mudguard (thanks to John Armstrong) and I'm not fussed anymore by the design issues, it does help a bit with keeping some of road crud off the back of the bike.

Unless you have a hugger on as well.....if you do remove - prepare for a whole load of water being diverted up your back.......I've removed mine twice now........forgetting the reason for removing in the first place and then riding 65miles into London on a v.wet day.......big mistake.

Might be fine if you dont have a hugger on there but I had an Ilmberger (?) hugger and the impact of removing was not good !
