what tires for winter use

Good point although I'd rather wait for a taxi than risk a smashed bike and months off for a broken leg! That said I've ridden hacks (battered 250 superdream or Gs400) through winters (snow included) but I guess I'm getting "too old for this shit". But if you have to.. buy something really shite like a wetdream and dont worry about the tyres!

I'd certainly want to be on something smaller and lighter than a G/S. I occasionally used to ride my MZ Supa 5 in the snow about 30 years ago and that was reasonably manageable.

Well, about winter sessions... I drive winter, becouse it is fantastics. Ok, GS is quite a heavy bike but I like it. Today i get to work with my GS, 50 kilometer each side, temperature -6 celsius. Sun shining and new snow on road, dam its great!

Also, I have KTM 520 exc with wintertyres. If I go to motocross road or fast endurotrack on forest, I choose KTM but another tours I start BMW.

Of course, sometimes there is too much snow. Falling, digging bike on ditch and perspiration on -20C are things why I like winter. Even more than summer...

Here some problems.

it be more fun if it was road legal and there is not much snow just ice and no grit but the main roads are fine but cant get on to the main road safely

-Are you 100% sure studded tyre are not legal on motorbike in The UK?

In Norway there are not the same law for car and motobikes when it comes to studds:
Cars can have only a few small studds.
Motorbikes can have as many as the rider want to, and longer too!

How about some Sports Touring Rubber, Roadsmarts work well in cold and wet conditions and are available in Roadsmart sizes.

Nothing practicle / legal is gonna grip on ice anyway, so a road tyre that workd well in cold wet has to be the best bet.

Avon Storms, BT-023's etc should all work better than most DP tyres on the road in any conditions, so unless your doing any of roading probably your best bet.

They are illegal in this country.

Fine in much of Scandinavia in the winter though.

I thought they were only illegal in situations where their use may lead to damage of the road surfaces ?? :nenau

SEE WHAT MEAN

Heh heh.....yeah,well maybe I don`t need the third wheel and tyre after all. :P

It was bloody hard flying the chair and trying to turn due to all that deep, soft sand.

Possibly because of the load too. :D :D :augie

Coming for a 'flight' in the snow sometime? :eek ;) ;)

OK - strictly I think you're right - they're illegal if they might cause damage to vehicles, people of road surfaces. However I think due to our usual snow conditions there is always the chance that they will come into contact with the road surface so are usually considered to be unsuitable for use in the UK.

Different case when I worked in Finnish Lapland - everyone had a second set of studded tyres for winter which you were legally obliged to use (and the cars had electric sump heaters). Trouble was you used to get a flat spot freeze into the tyre which took ages to warm up and unfreeze - used to be like driving with square wheels at the start of your journey :D
