Odd problem, never heard of it before: on my 1996 1100GS the side stand attaches to a bracket that transfers the weight of the bike through the mainstand pivot which is good and strong. OK so far. The bracket is kept from twisting when using the sidestand by an M8x25 screw though it and into the engine casing. This screw has sheared off and the stud is never, ever going to come out. Trust me on this, I've managed to snap an easyout in there.

The Cosmic Design Company has given us two threaded holes in the underside of the engine (perhaps to hold bodywork on the RT? Who knows?) which are in exactly the right place to hold a strip of steel running transversely and that my mate can MIG weld onto the bracket mentioned above, thus making the bracket stronger than it was when it left the factory. Great result!

I know I need to disconnect stuff before welding, but not sure I've got everything.

-- Battery (I know where that is...)
-- Fuel injection controller (I think I know where that is)
-- ABS controller? (No idea where that is)

Anything else?

That's it:thumb

All next to each other under the tank.

The ABS unit is the big brick with brake lines and bleed nipples :thumb2 (edit: Tim beat me to it)

Most importantly take pictures - lots of pictures.

Not for you but to show the rest of us - as the owner of a '94 1100 GS I have a special interest in people doing interesting stuff to them :D

I had some welding done on my bike last year. all that was done was the tank was lifted. battery disconnect - welding done - battery reconnected - tank rebolted - weld painted I handed over £20 and rode home.

no messing about with anything other than the battery, In fact this is the first time I've ever heard that anything in addition to the battery should be disconnected too. The chaps who did it are well known locally and work on a lot of bikes.. including a fair few beemers (they knew exactly how to get at the battery) and were happy to do the work as described.

for what its worth.. it was the bracket that the exhaust hangs from had sheared above the pillion footpeg.
