What to do in Durham....?

SWMBO and I will be in Durham this weekend - in the car, rather than on the bike.

What's to do, where's to go and what's to eat? We'll go to the Cathedral -it's years since I was last there and SWMBO's never been.

Go out in the nighttime, some nice bars in Durham though prices can be OTT. Any bar that does not sell triple vodka red bull will be expensive.

Durham, though I am loathed to admit it is one of the prettiest and smallest cities that I know.
The centre has been heavily traffic calmed and has a lovely square. It's a university city and as such is cosmopolitan in it's services and population ... maybe not as sophisticated as Edinburgh or London, but quieter....at least during the day

It's an awful place to work in if you're driving a van - narrow streets, restrictions, traffic calming etc

Perfect for those "en vacances".

Inshanghai & Dynasty both do all you can eat Buffet, Inshanghai best location/decor..Dynasty better food..just.

Durham

The Market Tavern in the (yep) Market Square is a good old-fashioned real ale pub and the Half Moon about a ten minute walk away is good too. Usually quite a lot going on in the evening at the Gala Theatre (live music,comedy nights etc) and that is really central and part of a new(ish) area where the more trendy bars are. Loads of good places to eat, the Court Inn is pretty good and the Bridge Pub is fine as well. If you are bringing kid's with you maybe check out the website for Beamish Museum, I think they are doing some special nights in the run up to Christmas,might have started by now? Hope you have a great time wherever you end up!

Try the National Railway Museum at Shildon , just south of Durham . It`s free .

Cathedral is nice, as are the views from the top of the tower, on a good day, as you already know. Not far away is the Angel of the North.

One word of caution, on a Saturday the cafes seem to like selling food / drinks for consumption in the premises to hundreds of people, when they only have seating for dozens.

Lived in Durham as a student - spent most of my free time in the student bars. However on my list would be:
-look round the cathedral, go up the tower.
-go for a hot chocolate and cake in the Almshouses cafe on the castle green.
-walk down the river to get a view of the cathedral from there. Possible boat trip.
-have a pint in the Shakespear or Market Tavern.
-a bit of shopping in the new shopping centre.
