Recently bought an 1150GS which came with the system panniers but no top box so looking for recommendations on a top box and base that will take at least one helmet and isn't going to look daft with the system panniers.

Maybe you have something you don't use that you are willing to part with?

I use a givi v47. Solid mounting, decent quality, looks as 'good' as a topbox can. I'm pleased with it.

Of you wanted ali, I'd recommend the Givi Outback all Ali top box. Well made

If you find a cheap BM one, fine. Otherwise, look to the aftermarket. A BwM one came with my GS - it is hard to believe that the same team that developed the panniers came up with this.

Thanks all for the advice, I really like the Outback in black but they aren't cheap!
The Maxia looks good too but concerned about the overhang and the rear frame thingy flexing. There aint much of a frame to bolt onto is there! I take it you would remove the grab rail and steal that space?

Try hunting one of these down, or make something similar to the brackets you can see in the image. Supports the Givi plate and spreads the load away from the alloy frame.

Why not a standard system topbox? :nenau

Nowt wrong with mine. Can't ever see why I'd need anything different. Does the job perfectly and matches. :thumby:

Have you got any pics of this mounting actually on a GS. I have just got an '02 R1150GS with system panniers and one of the stipulations from SWMBO was that if I got the bike it had to have a top box. I'm looking to use my Givi V46 that I had on my RT and want to see how this fits and looks.
All help and advice appreciated as usual.

The rear alloy sub frame on the 11** is a weak point and will crack if overloaded; there are (were) several fixes available, some of which come up on here for sale from time to time. Essentially they are a support bracket that fixes in the rear pannier rail mount holes and extends under the rear section of the OEM rack, thus offering more support. When fitted they are practically invisible unless photographed from underneath.

Still available from Givi here
