Got a bog standard home pc:
ram 1.7gb
intel core 2 quad q6600 @ 2.40ghz
ge force 7050 nvidia

Looking to upgrade the video card - what do I go for?

the new call of duty? or older version??

well it would work but you will get lowest quality and only a few frames per second.

the 7050 looks like it is integrated into the motherboard so depends what motherboard you have.. does it have a pci slot or an agp slot?

i would also put more ram into the comp - get another 2gb stick
the problem is that if upgrading the video card you might need to upgrade the power supply etc etc.

look for a 4870 or a 5770 from ATI or if u want to go for a nvidia card a 9800 or a gtx 260 would be ok, they will all run the game inc the newest 2010 version, but at fantastic quality details but good enough and with an avergae FPS so it wont be jerky.

remember it also depends on your memory, processor etc etc.

Feck, I was afraid of this :blast
Someone replying in what to them is clear, precise and fully understandable English - to me, however, its another language and one that I didn't study at school

Thanks for the reply :thumb2
I'll try and work out what it all means now :D

ok, give me a link to the game you would like to play - best also to have a look at the box in a shop as it will give u the minimum specs of the machine the game will play on.

in the graphic card market there are 2 main players nvidia and ATI.

not too much to choose between them TBH, i prefer ATI some prefer nvidia but i have found ati cards to be a bit better in performance than a corresponding nvidia card.

you have 2gb of memory in the computer, i would consider adding another 2gb before playing the game - its a chip that you stick into the computer board.

your current existing board seems to have the graphic card integrated into the motherboard.. this isnt common. so you need to check if it has an AGP or pci-e slot to fit a new graphic card.

tell us the brand and model of the computer.

the newer graphic cards need a power supply direct to the card to power them so you might need a new power supply, depending on the power rating of your current power supply, if its 350w then change it, otherwise u might get issues with the game freezing.

fps means frames per second, anything above 25- 30 fps is perfect for game play, less and its jerky and means your system can not cope with the demands of the game.

mate as graphics crads seem to replace eachother every three months !!!
i would got for a BFG8800GT 512mb card. this is a very good card and can be picked up very cheaply.
mind you any 8800gt graphics card will be better than what you have.
i also suggest getting 3 gig of corsiar ram, this will speed things up a bit.
anything more is wasted if your not running 64bit windows.

so, get some more ram (2 x 2gig corsair ram)
8800gt graphocs card 512mb minimum, 1 gig if your budget will run.
and away you go.
another thing that helps is a decent monitor with a quick refresh rate.
the best being 2ms response time. but the higher you run your resolution, the harder you make your graphics card work.
hope this helps

oh and as mentioned before, get a good beefy power supply, this vastly improves performance too

I have used an 8800gt 1gb card and it will run call of duty but not great and has to be on minimum quality levels.
