What was the most serious issue with yours and when

One roadstop

2008 F800GS 103.500 km.

A lot of small repairs (maintenance...) but one serious roadstop last year.
Died on German Autobahn without any electricity, then on 97.500 km.
Get towed in to a garage where generator and regulator was changed.

Waranty = no brainer.

I have a R1200GS 2010 that does 16o miles a day, every day.

2 x fog light switches replaced
1 x Magnesium cyclinder cover replaced
2 x fuel sensors replaced
1 x warped wheel replaced

2 x punctures, recovery to BMW dealer

Extended warranty = good value for money imho (and I have n't mentioned European breakdown cover)

My 09 650 gs will be coming up to a year of ownership so what sort of warranty fee will they be looking for. rough figure anyone ?

emergence service Included

There are other companies out there - a friend ditched the BMW warranty on his 3 series and when a 'life of the vehicle' sealed unit in the gearbox went (£3000!) they stumped up no issues. The only downside is that you have to leave it in the shop a day or two longer whilst payment is authorised.

I let mine drop out however as i recall my renewal letter came in at about the £300 mark on a '59 658. Worst case get some quotes and call BMW with them and see what they'll do for you. Can't hurt to ask :nenau

thanks guys cant see myself stumping up that amount even though the peace of mind is nice

Post purchase 3rd 4th year warranties don't cover a half of what the original warranty did

If BMW want to take money off you for a further warranty I'm willing to bet they've costed everything out and will be making money out of you ....

So call their bluff and don't bother with extended warranties :aidan

Blimey, these 800GSs seem to be crap, despite the fantastic pre-launch reviews. I must have got one of those bikes :-D

Don't forget that the extended warranties don't cover half of what the original warranty did :blast

85,000 + miles, five years summer & winter use ... no serious problems :thumb2

Four sets of head bearings, alternator and rectifier errrr mmmmm

.... that's about it.

If BMW, or for that matter VW, Panasonic or the LEC fridge people want to take a few hundred bier tokens off me to guarantee (questionable) their stuff a bit longer then I'll call their bluff and do without .... to date I'm in front :thumb2

:beerjug:

Mickey, any chance you can remember the mileage when the alternator went on you? Also, how many valve adjustments and approx. when?
I would really appreciate it if you can let me know, thanks.

2011
Less than 500 miles.
Front brake would fail with very little lever input.

Great bike but a serious 'known' fault. I p/exd it for the R1200GS which has no such issues. I lost out financially but I'm still alive!

Alternator was last year in Germany, without looking, I'd guess at 70,000+

Valve adjustments? Ha .... not needed any :thumb

What's that all about then? Nothing specific with the 800 :nenau

What's this 'known fault' :augie

Thanks, Mickey.

Jay, what was the cause of the front brake problem? Thanks!

Perhaps I should rephrase the 'known fault' with a 'known issue'. This front brake issue has been covered on ADV as well as other forums. The first I read of it I felt it must be a one off. I then read more and more of the owner reports stating the same symptons and then it clicked, I too had experienced the same issue. I was then able to induce the failing front brake at will. It is something that would only happen at very slow speed. A quick dab on the front brake would render the brake ineffective as the ABS would take over and start pulsating.
I didn't initially tie this experience in with the reports I was reading until it happened a second time. After that, and as I stated above, I could induce it at will at low speed.
The answer - don't try to brake too sharply at slow speed. But then not all riding circumstances are the same from day to day. I've never had this problem before on a conventional braking system, except when I boiled the front brake fluid going down the Stelvio  on a Funduro, two up and loaded, and cannot induce it on the 1200 either, or any other ABS fitted bike I've ridden. That tells me it is not rider error but a design issue.

Just had my 2012 F800GS back from the dealers with this fault, replaced abs sensor and ring under warranty, changed the front end braking no end, must have been dodgy from the start cause it feels a 100x better than before. rode for last 8 months with problem convincing myself that's what abs on a bike feels like, as not riden with abs before last 16 years.
Since been changed (1500 miles) ive had the abs work maybe 2, 3 times in total (in rain, cold, sunny, dry weather conditions) before that I would maybe do it once or twice per journey!
Fingers crossed!

Now at 101,570 miles ... no issues.

Biggest quandary is where next? :D

It is the time of the year when BMW extended warranty services ask me for more money in exchange for piece of mind.
As there were few post here about extended warranty by myself and others discussing whether it is or it is not a good deal/think to do, I thought it might be worth to sum up experince of various F800GS owners with their bikes to have an overview of reliability of the bike and give an impression to people who think about extending their warranty.

Could anyone who wishes to participate mention Bike age, mileage and major issues he had with it (at what mileage), eventually how much was the repair.

As for myself:
4 years/22000 miles/No issues

2008 f800gs 11000miles

Failed slave/balance con-rod bearing! A huge big mess!

Final cost not yet know still in the process of re-building

Currently £500 (reconditioned crank and balance rod & gaskets/bolts)

BMW UK said it wasn't their problem and told me to shove it where the sun don't shine

Local BMW dealer is bending over backwards to help where they can, even tried to help with getting the case through to BMW UK

No wonder people come away from the forum occasionally thinking it's all doom and gloom, when people actually start threads titled like this

2009 800GS 56k, superior yellow and black version. Usual consumables plus it's due for it's 5th set of cheese bearings. I think two of those have been FOC on parts warranty.

Alternator went at 54k on the way to the ferry and fried the stator. Repaired on a Sunday by Ocean BMW. Great service (might have mentioned that before. Worth mentioning again!).

Paint peeled off the sump recently. Just repainted it.

The only annoying problem was when it started playing up in Spain losing power, warm temperatures, emptying fuel tank, sudden power loss. That kept repeating and proved difficult to diagnose. Eventually solved by changing fuel pump and controller.

No extended warranty ( I'm still ahead ) but quite a bit of 'goodwill' through Rainbow and Ocean dealers.

Great bike. I'd buy another. In fact I've took a fancy to the Adventure version but I'm loathe to part with this one.:thumb
