Met up with fellow UKGSER member this evening ref my post on soundproofing our engines post. What a character & gentleman! Harold it was a pleasure to meet you & chew the cud ref our common interest, stay in contact & ride safe

Good to hear! Bumped into Skipster yesterday at Bahnstormer, nice to have a quick chat about bikes etc meet a fellow inmate!

As the "Harold" referred to I welcomed the chance to talk "Noises", what ever other opinions might abound. I didn't have the chance to hear Mr. Mac's engine before the deadening mod, but hearing it then in the confined space of a garage, I can understand his enthusiasm.
I shall certainly do mine when the riding is curtailed by the weather and report accordingly. To you, Chris many thanks for your hospitality and interest.

I'm using the original post and topic to start with but then would like to add another point or two.
I purchased two rolls of the foam that Chris. Mac. suggested but because I had a little more time and having spoken to him again, I think I applied more of the foam than he did.
Chris talked about sticking it in places he thought would be effective but I believe I went further and covered as much of the inside of the main panels around the engine as possible. It wasn't easy nor a quick job and needed many thin cardboard templates, but I thought it worthwhile having taken the trouble to remove the panels.

Was it a success? Not a question easy to answer for as we have heard "noise is in the ear of the listener". I am not one to claim improvement to justify an action, but I can say that if I had to, I could happily ride it without my moulded ear plugs (highly recommended, by the way) whereas before the mod, I was critical of how it sounded. With the ear plugs, even better. If any one wants further details, let me know.

Other points: My pre. steering damper, 2013, light flywheel model has reached 12000 miles and has been self serviced. Recently I checked the valve clearances and can report that no adjustment was needed. This seems to be the norm. On all valves, a gauge minus .001mm less than "Minimum" just slipped in and plus .001mm would not. If only my Vincent of many years ago (yes I am that old!) had had cams in the condition I found in the BM, I would have been then very happy.

Two questions for the Forum, that a main dealer can not answer! How does the automatic decompressor actually work and what is the purpose of the machined out hollows in the exhaust cams? The dealer said "they're all like that". A great "fall back" answer.?

I love my early light flywheel LC. The wet clutch into first clunk I accept, the gearbox is asking to be understood and I enjoy working with it. As I don't do a big mileage, I use 97 Octane fuel and I feel, but can't prove!, that it suits the light flywheel. Well it pleases me!
I wonder what differences I would notice in a 2017 model. I bet they would only be minor.

Hi Harold
Its good to hear a positive report on your experience, ref the decompressor, its centrifugal, decompressing 1x? (I think) valve. once the engine is spinning at idle or above the valve operates as normal
