What's a reasonable cost for 24000 mile service

Just got my 04 12GS back from Pidcocks after a 24,000 mile service. Dispite having 20% discount on labour and 10% on parts (but not oil) it still cost £260. New plugs, air filter and gearbox oil plus the usual.

Is this a reasonable charge, seems a bit high to me although both 18,000 and 12,000 mile services cost just over £200 so maybe it's about right.:nenau Think I'll be doing alternate ones myself now it's out of warranty.

I was surprised it didn't need new rear pads, I replaced them at 8,000 miles with BMW ones but the replacements seem to be lasting far longer than the originals (thank goodness).

Mines coming up to it's 24000 service in the next month or so so I can't help I'm afraid. Do they not also do a brake fluid change at 24000 miles?

However, I'll also be using Pidcocks and am interested in what you mean by % discount - is thiat something you negotiated yourself at the time of booking in?

24000 mile service is the same as 12000 plus the gearbox oil change and new plugs (all).
No brake fluid change, it's not specified on the schedule and I seem to remember that it's got a different sort of fluid (i.e. not the usual DOT4) which presumably doesn't degrade the same, certainly one shouldn't top-up with normal brake fluid, not that it ever needs any.

Pidcocks were offering 10% off parts and 20% off labour for servicing during December and January. Presumably in an effort to keep the workshop busy over winter, maybe you could persuade them this should extend into Feb. (it probably saved about £50 or so).

I had my 21-month old 12GS serviced by Pidcocks at 24,000 miles and it was definitely less than £200, can’t remember the exact figure but it only had the normal stuff done… no brake pads etc. It was still in warranty and, shortly afterwards, they took it in PX for a GSA, which I pick up in March, shipwrecks permitting!
I remember that I had a service last Jan/Feb time and, in addition to a 10% discount, they came and picked the bike up, and dropped it back afterwards… a big bonus when you don’t live in Long Eaton and the weather’s crap!
Regarding the brakes… I replaced the (original) rear ones at about 8,000 miles with genuine BMW ones, since then neither the front nor rear have needed replacing, which tends to bear out your theory about replacements lasting longer that originals… unless they wear a lot more when a new disc is ‘bedding-in’.

Thanks for explaining the discount - I'll see what I can negotiate :thumb2

With regard to brake fluid change I suspect I have, as usual, got the wrong end of the stick but I'm sure the fluid change used to be at 1year/12000 miles and was then changed to 2 years/24000 miles. I know it's been discussed here before but I honestly can't remember (or find) the conclusion of the thread.

However, I think the atatched bears this out?

I had a 12,000 mile service at Cannon in Braintree before Christmas and it was £250. They changed the brake fluid as there was no record of it having been done before (second hand bike not purchased originally from them).
If the services are the same apart from plugs and gear box oil then I would suggest that this is about right?

I recall that the brake fluid changes are now every 2 years for the wheel control circuit and every 4 years for the other circuit. As said before, the main difference between the 12 and 24k service is changing the 4 spark plugs and the gearbox oil. Unlike the 1150/1100's there is no fuel filter to change.

Just checked the tick sheet and it doesn't mention change of brake fluid, I suspect it's because I have it serviced according to mileage and the fluid might have been changed when the bike was 2 years old, it's 2.5 now. I'll check when i have time to sift through my bike "file" . The tick sheet is for maintenance not annual inspections.

24000 mile service carried out by Jefferies BMW on Monday. Service to the book - new oil engine/gearbox, oil filter, brake grease (!!!), air filter & spark plugsx4.

Total cost £285.35 - not cheap - but hey, it's a BMW :)

Oh, and they did send me out on a brand new 2007 GS as a loaner so I suppose they have to cover those costs aswell.

Yep, sounds about the same. I also noticed as I returned Pidcock's old GS1150 loan bike that they had three brand spanking new loan bikes just PDI'd and ready to go (I should have waited a day for service and got a new one!)

Just queried the fact that although I've had every service done by Pidcocks that they have never changed the brake fluid. They said the service schedule has changed and the brake fluid only needs chaging every 4 years now. Sounds feasible or do I smell bovine poo?
BTW the fluid is DOT4 (mineral oil based)
