Whats covered and whats not

My 1200gs Warrantee runs out mid April. It’s a 2008 bike with 6k on the clock and full service history. I have given it a really good clean today and found corrosion around the front cover. It is really un-sightly, I am not impressed.
I wash the bike off regularly and if used over winter hose the salt off it after every use. My previous bikes (Honda) has never had this problem with build quality.
So the question is this covered under the BMW warrantee?

Yep, they all do that and yep, they will replace it under warranty.

Also worth checking the disks. The rear disk on my 08 scraped a little, I didnt think much of it, but had it checked by the dealer and he replaced it under warranty.

If your bike is under the manufacturers 2 year warranty then they might but if it's under the BMW Used Bike Warranty then they definately won't

I wouldn't use the term "I have given it a really good clean" to the dealer as this may indicate that normally you don't bother and if as you say you wash the bike off regularly the dealer may question the reason why how come you have only just noticed the corrosion?

I thought the BMW extended warranty mirrored the original manufacturers warranty as long as you kept up BMW service history (or at least that was the impression more than one dealer gave me when trying to pry £9k out of my hands)

I have always avoided these third party companies as they wriggle out of everything and have excesses / maximums and all sorts of small print to gaurantee you never get bugger all out of them, I thought the premium you paid for BMW warranty gave a bit more than that (Suppose I should have known better)

I would suggest to the OP that he reads his Policy Booklet ...... Corrosion is something that is not covered and never is covered on any used vehicle policy

Ill let you all know. When I said I gave it a good clean, I meant wash and polish! Polishing the engine is not something I would do normally; the corrosion is only around the bolts and only noticeable when up close but it is only going to get worse.
To say this bike is my pride and joy is about right, it gets used every day and gets lots of time lavished on it to keep it clean.

If the corrosion not covered I will do the job myself. Stripping the paint right off and etch primer then silver topcoat and lacquer. (The proper job) but I am a bit miffed that it’s gone this soon.

My last bike the Fireblade was 4 years old I had owned from new used through 4 winters and never got corrosion anywhere, this BMW was 2 years old when bought and had done summer miles only (less than 2k) so one winter and looking crap. (a bit pissed really) especially for £9.5k.

My GSA has done over 27,000 miles and the front cover is like new but then again I did invest in a front cover crud catcher after 2000 miles and I'm convinced this has helped prevent any corrosion caused by road crap being flicked up into the front cover

Yes that I think is on my list once I get my cover sorted, A mudgard extension as well? Just covered over 6k since having the bike. Looking forward to Europe in June

Once you get the corroded cover replaced, invest in a can of ACF50 at about £14, remove the plastic alternator belt guard and spray behind it (avoiding the belt) then refit the guard.

Coupled with a mudguard extender and crud catcher, the new item should survive nicely.

I haven't got a mudguard extender on mine .... there's really no need once the crud catcher is fitted

Jst covered 19150 on my 2008 an front cover still ok no blistering yet,an just fitted a mudgaurd xtender from 7000 miles an slap acf50 on the front cover arond the bolt fixings .small print covering xtended warranty parts is a must

I have some corrosion on my bike too, im not impressed either. I went to bmw and asked for a good will gesture and the flatly said no. still it is an 11 year old 1150

Sadly not - corrosion of engine panels is not included in the extended warranty (I tried, after the engine cover that I did get replaced under the original warranty corroded again.... no luck). It's in the small print.

No surprises then. Called Williams this am and no not covered.
Called BMW customer services and to put it straight, they could not give a toss.
Told me corrossion was not covered at all. They told me to take the bike into Williams and get them to look at it and see if they would do a good will gesture.

Took the bike to williams and their mechanic said BMW are getting iffy on most warrantee claims , and would never do a front cover. His advice check again with BMW Customer services.

My point was a bike of 3 years old should not corrode. My last 3 Hondas did not, so I would expect a BMW not to. If they can do it with their cars (12 year anti corrosion warranty ) why not bikes?

Well BMW have now lost my custom. Booked into Adventurer Bike Warehouse for a service. I will keep this bike for a few more years then back to HONDA. Sad state of affairs when the Japs can get it wright and the Germans cannot.

mark could you do a crud catcher to extend about 2ins futher south?,

if so and its a special how much please.

btw i have one of your crud catchers already but i think it needs to be slightly deeper.
