On the train to fetch my 800!

The time is almost here, 1.5 hours to go …
I'm allowed to be excited now. Not changing my signature yet!
Catherine.

Good luck! And enjoy the new bike.

Just a note, make sure you have all possible paperwork with you including a utility bill and both parts of your driving licence, don't ask me how I know:o But i'm sure if you forget something the train trip back again won't be so exciting:D

Got it!

Fantastic service from North Oxford Garage, thanks Alex.
Got to work a bit late! Looking forward to trying it out on the way to Solihull tonight. Bit disorientated from riding a Ducati 998S around Brands GP all day yesterday. The 800GS seemed fast when I test rode it … we'll get on great I know we will.
Here's to the adventures to come.

Very happily picked up my new bike on Tuesday. Rode for 160 miles, strange sensation through the bars (were they really coming loose?!). Called out BMW service: told it was safe to ride. Got back to Gary, got him to have a look at it. Turns out to be about 2 inches of play in the forks. Called out BMW again. Guy came out (car mechanic) tightened the headstock bolt up and told me to get back to North Oxford garage. We tried it yesterday to see if it loosened itself again and it did. So it's not just a matter of they forgot to torque the bolt. Seems like duff bearings.
Thanks to Alex for arranging to collect today.

One indicator lens is broken, the front mudguard is spoilt by brake fluid spilt on it, the number plate is wearing through where 2 metal bolts are pressed hard against it.

I bought a new bike to stop having to get stuff fixed!
I'd like to relax and enjoy it.
Catherine.

the 800's are built in Spain or somewhere??? aren't they

Dang! Well... get a few things sorted out and then hopefully trouble-free. Stick with it and don't let 'em wear ya down! KLR

Really sorry to hear of the trouble, Catherine, I imagine it rather sours the joy of taking delivery of your new bike but hopefully the dealer will quickly fix all the problems and you'll be off riding into the sunset (or whatever).

Wow, that really sucks and must really kill the new bike buzz.... I have a love/hate relationship with these threads as I have an 800 on order (September delivery date) . Keep us posted on what happens and what the problem was.

Thanks to BMW for keeping me posted. They didn't say what they'd found or even whether they'd had a look, just that the bearings are on back order, so I wonder when will I get my new bike back? I'm quite sad.
Catherine.

what happened to BMW build quality, read the forums...

As an owner of an 800 GS, i have to be completely dead honest and say that SO FAR i dont have a problem with my bike (WAIT, YES I DO, THE F IS MISSING FROM THE GRAPHICS ON THE TANK LEFT SIDE AND THE G IS MISSING FROM THE TANK GRAPHICS ON THE RIGHT SIDE) I love riding it, goes well sounds bloody gorgeous, does some decent MPG as well. I havent bothered to clock up all the recalls and the problems people are so far encountering with this bike, but if you added up all the adverse comments as well as problems, then you'd have, errr quite a few!!. I dont know where the 800 GS is actually built, nor whether they have heard 2 words that I'd like them to hear and respond to. those words are: QUALITY and CONTROL. Is it designed properly and is it put together properly, answers on a tenner to my email address please!!! Got to be a big NO. BMW WHAT THE FECK ARE YOU THINKING OF, SORT OUT ALL THE QUALITY ISSUES NOW!!! You might even sell more bikes then. I personally like mine and wouldnt swap it for anything else (now that I've said that, does it increase the likelihood of the igniton ring sensor failing, while the front brake falls off due to the bolts having not being torqued down properly, while the poor quality low seat splits when i sit on it, sitting in a layby being scalded by the coolant leaking from the pipe at the top of the radiator. Or possibly even sitting there and wondering wjy its run out of petrol when the gauge says i STILL have 40 miles left of fuel????

I'd go some way to agreeing with you Mark.

However ....(and this is not to let BMW and some their dealerships off the hook) .... I find myself asking the question, what percentage of F800GS's sold from BMW dealerships since release in March 2008, have had "issues" (other than recalls)? Don't know the answer, and suspect there's nobody that does! :augie

What I very strongly suspect is that people are far more inclined to post on this site about bad experiences with their bikes ..... than post about their happiness & satisfaction!

BTW ..... my F800GS has covered 4K without any problems whatsoever ..... :clap

Im ahppy with mine, no issues really worth writing home about... theres one... touch wood..

+1,

I've had the top hose issue (twice now) & a couple of stalls. But i wouldn't swap it for any other bike presently out there.

On balance i'd give it 90/100, A+

I think mine's a marvelous thing. :thumb2

BMW Rusting away, less than 12 months old

I got my bike out from the garage yesterday for a ride, did my usual checks and was horrified to see the chain had once again started to rust up. I then removed the front sprocket cover to see the washer had started to rust and the sprocket. One of the screws that holds the chain guard in place had also started to rust.
Now I cleaned the chain three weeks ago, and put wurth chain wax on it as the same thing happened previously. I did the same again and have now purchased some more expensive ceramic putaline chain wax to try and prevent this from happening again but I am not happy.
My triumph sprint st1050 05 plate sits next to the BMW in the garage with no such signs. She has been in the same garage for over two years whereas the BWM has sat there for less than 12 months !
I have only covered 1200 miles on the BMW and mainly dry weather too. I am disgusted with this level of quality especially after paying a 'premium' for BMW. I am contacting AJ in Shipley for them to inspect the bike and see if I can have parts replaced under warrantly.
This is my first BMW and I have always wanted a GS and the 800 fitted my requirements perfectly. BUT, I am not at all happy with the shoddy coatings that are now showing their true 'worth'.
Anyone else with issues ?
