Serious responses only please

I'm thinking of getting my 56 plated 1200GSA ready to sell. It's seen life so there are scratches and gouges in the usual places and the seat has a couple of small tears. The tank/beak panels are matt slate grey (current 1200GS colour).

It has ABS, computer, front spots. It's recently serviced, front knobbly OK, new rear knobbly. New battery about 2500 miles ago.

Any pointers on price would be appreciated.

well boy, I hav'nt got'a gsa,but I took my GS into a dealer to find out what I could get for it on a trade-in,my bike, 05,with 30k on,they would only come up with 4k. against a 07 bike
went to a triumph dealer, against a new bike,5300..
I would think to sell your bike private, some where between,5700/6300:nenau.
you could always raffle it...:D

Given that 2006 GS's are going for around 7500 from dealers, You'd need to knock off up to a grand for a private sale, then knock off another lump as your bike has been used as nature intended as opposed to the many, many GS's of that age currently for sale in showroom condition with only 10k or so on the clock. I reckon you'd be looking at six grand tops.

since i assume the bike has seen quite a few trips to Morocco it would have a much harder life than most bikes when if at all were shocks serviced? or are there others fitted... how much of the bike is tatty?
you also don't say if there are any other extras with it or just lights

I was offered £7,000 for a 06 GSA with 14,000 miles on it last year.......

......I'm guessing you can knock off about £2,000 for the higher milage and it's condition??

I would hang on for a while the ass is dropping out of the used bike market in the uk and as the crunch tightens they are the first things to go!
Still good deals to be had if your buying new though as dealers still need to sell there quotas, just bought mine!

I have a similar aged bike with similar mileage but minus the ABS. I`ve checked around and dealers (BuMW and others) have suggested that 7K is the price to ask as long as it has FSH.

I think it would be a good buy at that and I don`t think mileage is an issue because sensible buyers know that 46K is no problem.

Bahnstomers offered in the high 5's eight months ago when the mileage was about 1000 less (you can see why I'm selling it).

There's a load of extras for the bike which I would offer to whoever bought it (or otherwise remove), but I'm trying to establish a rough base price without extras.

Yes, it's done 1000-1500 miles on pistes and gravel roads but nothing the suspension can't handle. The vast majority of the mileage has been gentle cruising on long journeys, and apart from the FPC failure and battery failure it's been remarkably reliable.

Maybe I'll clean it, take it for a run, and decide to keep it. :)

IMHO that's way way over the odds :eek

I would think more like mid 5's is realistic if you want to sell it, Tims has ABS and bling so maybe a few hundred more. As you say, you could ask for 7, but I think it would be a waste of time. Regardless of what you think, mileage IS an issue, 46k miles might not be a problem for the bike but more than likely would be for the buyer. Why would a sensible buyer need to bother when there's going to be another 4 or 5 advertised that have only been to Boxhill and back on sunny Sundays unless the price was right...?

Good points but I think close to 7 is the mark for a 2006 GS-A to a private buyer. Mileage is an issue but not as much as on other bikes and to people who want a good bike with FSH.

Not an issue or me because I`ve decided not to sell but late 1150GS and GS-A are fetching, or should I say sellers are asking, 5 to 6k which is really overpriced IMHO.

If I recall, that 140,000 mile 1200GS-A fetched upward of 5k on fleabay:nenau

Mines got similar mileage, and runs better and smother then ever. Keep it for another couple of years, do you own servicing and sell in it for £3500 - £4500

Px'ed my fully loaded '06 GSA for £6,500 for an '09 which I picked up yesterday. 13K miles. Good nick, but with the usual wear and tear. Tried selling it on this forum for £7,000 but no luck. Couldn't be bothered to try MCN or other methods.

Worth considering what the price of the bike is with extras, and the price of the bike without extras , plus what you can make selling the extras.

I suspect that selling the add ons separately may provide a better final total.

Let me start by saying that I own a 34k 1100, so I'm not obsessed by mileage, but unfortunately mileage will always be an issue.
There's a natural tendency for the owners of any vehicle to 'talk up' the value of the model in question, but when faced with a choice buyers will always tend to favour lower mileage. It's all very well to bleat on about them 'being good for 200k' and to denigrate buyers who are concerned by mileage as not being 'sensible', but in the end there are plenty of those buyers about.

The same applies to off road use. Sure, that's what they're designed for (although it's debatable with any boxer BMW), but again buyers will always favour the bike that's lived in a heated garage and just bimbled around on A roads every Sunday. You see just the same with Landrovers (and they are designed for off road use) - immaculate 'never been off road' examples always sell at the expense of those which have been used 'as intended'.

In the end it all depends on how badly you want to sell and what choice there is for potential buyers - it's worth what someone's prepared to pay. Unfortunately, you're unlikely to get a realistic valuation from owners of the same bike.

One thought, how much do the ex World of BM off-road 1200 GSA bikes go for. They're the sort of bike you're up against, and they're only about 6 months old, so given a similar spec, then I guess you'll not be too happy

Tim,

Let me know if and when you decide to sell it, I have your old GS1200 (now on 53000 miles) and would not mind an upgrade to an Adventure.

Alex

Problem is not how many miles your bike has done, boxers have a long life. Problem is that there are lots of second hand bikes about with same spec but lower mileage. You have gotten more miles out of your bike, more value if you will, and that's what is lost in resale price.

I px'ed my june '05 R12GS with 60000km/40000mls for a december '07 R12GS. Best offer was to be had at BMW dealership.

Best offer I got for my mint 07 GS1200 with 6500 miles on it & take out a new adventure was £6600 :mad::mad: got £7500 private for it & thats why i now ride a Suzuki :thumb:thumb:thumb talk about BMW customer loyalty :ronno:ronno:ronno
