What's stopping me...Vario luggage.

Inclined to agree....:)

If I KNEW that I really did want panniers every now and then, I would buy some that I could shift from bike to bike, as and when.....Like Givi....

So how would they fit on an LC? Too high, too wide or too high and too wide?

Some of the non BMW panniers/top boxes really do look like wearing a pair of wellies with a new suit. I never had any issues with varios
But each to their own & all that.......

The varios look good on the bike, and don't leave much hardware on the bike when you take them off.

Others, eg TT Zegas make it easy to use all the space, don't waste space on expanding mechanisms that are rarely used, and the racks make great rear end crash bars and can probably be easily converted to fit other bikes relatively cheaply. But they don't have "BWM" on them.

YMMV.

Varios are not only practical and compact until you actually need the extra volume and only take seconds to expand if you do but they are also the best looking on the market.
Aluminium crates hanging off the side of bikes look grim. Sorry, but it has to be said.
The new GS is too good looking to think of putting anything else on it!

Agreed. My twin-cam GSA came with the free ally panniers, I never used them and sold them here. I took the scaffolding off as soon as I got the bike and boxed it up, and it went back with the bike to the dealer when I px'd it against the WC last weekend. I bought some varios for the GSA instead, I think they look nicer and they are more practical for my use. I daresay bmw'll offer ally cases for the new WC GSA when it comes along, but I'll be sticking to varios again.

Cheers
Jimmy

id have thought they would have designed some new boxes for the new steed ive had vario's and alloy, now im having neither, im travelling light, 45ltr roll top, north face £90 plenty of room and they don't ruin the handling

I'm a Vario fan, having got them with the bike in '05. Mine are left on all the time, in the closed position. They have survived 60k miles, some of which wasn't Tarmac. :D The expanding mechanism gets a squirt of silicone occasionally to keep it moving, but I only tend to open them up to put helmets in anyway. Never had a problem with water ingress, never had them fall off, rarely had to adjust the mushrooms. Having said that, I wouldn't want to spend a grand on any type of luggage!

I also was weighing up the Varios v Givi Trekkers. A pair of Trekkers are approx £390(33ltr) model and approx £214 for a 2012 frame. So not much in it re Varios against Givis, although I accept that the Givis can be passed on to the next bike.
I am thinking along the Varios line as there is less left on the bike when not in use.

My Hexhead adventure has more luggage than a bike with big luggage. It's great, but I prefer the easy filtering of my old Diversion 900 with its tucked in tight 35litre Kappas.

Had Varios on my first GS. Hated them and would never buy them again, but each to their own.

I find the inner dimensions pretty small, I don't like the fact that they open out the way and I think they're pretty easily broken. I managed to break one of the lugs in mine when I binned the bike. I also reckon that they're pretty easily removed / broken into. I know that some people love them, but I prefer to stick with the aluminium ones.
